Jake's first mission is scrubbed

Although this mission was scrubbed, one airplane suffered damage. Overloaded for landing with a full complement of fuel and bombs, it blew a tire and the left landing gear collapsed. Luckily, no one was injured.

Dearest Dad,

I went on my first mission but it didn't count because we were recalled before we reached the target. (The recall was probably weather related.) I felt just like I did before a fight. I certainly missed you being in my corner. (Jake liked boxing.)

Your letters sent to me in G.I. mail reached me yesterday. I heard that quite a number of packages came in today. I hope some are from you and folks.

Thanks for the Masonic card. I've met five or six men in the group that are members. I haven't had a chance to go to any meeting, but will as soon as I get a chance.

Tell Jessie, Mayme, and Grandmother that their letters were much appreciated. Love to all.

Dearest Mother,

Your sweet interesting letter came with quite a few others. I got twenty in two days. The folks at home really must be thinking of me. You sitting in the backyard really makes me homesick. I believe I could be content to sit there for the rest of my life.

Aunt Jane's package never got to me. I sent her one of the photographs like yours. Dad's offices should be just about filled.

I haven't met any girls yet, but guess I will soon. They don't stand a chance with Columbia (?) who I haven't heard much from.

Tell Penn to get to work and write soon.
