Largo man refused tacos at drive-thru, calls 911
LARGO --
A Largo man was arrested early Wednesday on charges he called 911 because Taco Bell refused to sell him food at the drive-thru window because he wasn’t in a car.

Terry Kimbell, 50, was charged with misuse of the 911 system, a misdemeanor. He was released shortly after his arrival at the Pinellas County Jail.

Late Tuesday night, Kimbell got through to the Largo Police Department, and said he didn’t use his car to drive to a Taco Bell at 13709 Walsingham Road because he had been drinking, so he walked up to the drive-thru window.

1. LOL. Well, there is a SIGN under the drive thru window
that says that they will not serve walk-ups...for their own safety.

Not sure I agree...but hey, they do have it posted as do the majority of fast food restaurants with drive-thrus.

4. Largo man sues Taco Bell after being hit by car at drive-thru
This is what would have happened if they served a walk-up in a drive-thru.

6. We used to do this in the 80s
In college, when none of us had a car, four of us would walk in the drive-thru lane, arranged as a driver and three passengers, and would roll down the imaginary window, etc. It was amusing the first few times, but they asked us to stop doing it, and we agreed. In the current litigation frenzy world, I'm not surprised they disallow it.

8. I've ordered on foot many times, and never had any issues.
I drive a box truck, and am often out until midnight, or even later, when the lobby is closed. Sometimes, if the ordering doesn't have a height issue, I can order from the truck, then swing wide, get out of the truck and pay (since the truck is too tall to go under the overhang.). Sometimes I have to order on foot, since the truck can not get to where you place your orders.

I never have any problems. I think it really depends on a persons appearance, and the neighborhood.

The bigger issue I have, is why was this person arrested? He wasn't presenting a thread (I would assume). Isn't is a waste of resources to arrest him, then release him an hour or two later? Why not give him a citation, then let him show up to court in a few days? I guess there is a small chance he was being disorderly as well, but he wasn't charged with disorderly conduct.

9. There are both food outlets and coffee shops all over here that have no other option
A typical espresso stand has just enough room inside for the two workers. The ONLY way to buy anything is to get into one of the car lanes. People do it all the time, both walking and on bicycle. Commercial fast food chains, on the other hand, don't allow it because they can't trust their customers to drive any better than that. I suspect it's the insurance company rather than the local restaurant management that makes the decision.

As far as that goes, there are BANKS in town that only have their drive-thru window open on evenings and Saturdays. There's no other way to do business there than to walk through the car lane either.
