Israel Says Egyptian Election Results ‘Disturbing’

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel’s defense minister said Saturday that initial results from Egypt’s parliamentary elections are “very, very disturbing.”

Few official results have been released from the first round vote, but leaked counts point to a clear majority for Islamist parties led by the Muslim Brotherhood.

Defense Minister Ehud Barak said he hopes Egypt’s first parliament to be seated after the ouster of longtime leader Hosni Mubarak will respect international treaties, including its shaky 1979 peace treaty with Israel.

Israel’s main fear is the Muslim Brotherhood, which has been cool to the peace treaty and has close ties with the ruling Hamas militant group in the Gaza Strip. The election is being held in stages and the final outcome won’t be known until next year.

We'll see how far the military allows this democratic result to proceed--these are just initial results, there will be more elections to come. Time to start stuffing the ballot boxes or discrediting candidates as the election process rolls on, I suspect.

A platform of "Push the Jews into the Sea" isn't going to be helpful to regional relations.

Disturbing to who? Egyptians vote for their own interest,just like Israel votes for their own interest and any other country votes for their own interest,except for the US who always puts Israels interest first before our interest
No one should expect Egypt or anyone else to put another countries interest before theirs.
And by the way,the world does not evolve around Israel,or their Interest alone.
Every country has their own priority ,and their elections and who they chose in their own political process should not to be dictated by ANY outsiders.

The Egyptian military knows that the US aid spgot gets tied up for a long time if a Muslim Brotherhood government tries to make war with Israel. Odd, that a military dictatorship is the cooler head.

What did they expect when the U.S. and Israel have supported repressive regimes from Sadat to Mubarak? People tire of being treated like human slaves. The Muslim Brotherhood was banned in Egypt but still found ways to help people in neighborhoods. So it is not surprising they won big in these first elections. Now they will have to deliver for the people. But Israel should be afraid, very afraid.
