A subsidiary of a Japanese semiconductor firm says it will close a plant in Thailand due to the damage caused by flooding. Sanyo Semiconductor Thailand announced on Friday that it has decided the damage is too severe to resume the operation of its facility in the Rojana Industrial Park in Ayutthaya Province.
The company said it will ask all of about 1,600 Thai workers to quit. Sanyo is thought to be the first Japanese company to close a plant in Thailand due to damage from floods. Sanyo Semiconductor Thailand is one of about 460 Japanese-affiliated companies affected by floods. 7 industrial parks in Ayutthaya and elsewhere were inundated. The Japan External Trade Organization says more Japanese-affiliated firms in Thailand may not resume operations as drainage work proceeds and the damage situation becomes clearer.
