Ted Rall: Iraqi Resisters are Patriots
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/030827/7/530nc.html

TIME TO GET REAL IN IRAQ

NEW YORK--Nearly 70 percent of Americans tell
Newsweek that "the United States will be bogged
down in for years without
achieving its goals." Yet 61 percent tell the same
poll that invading Iraq was the right thing to do.
The reason for this weird disconnect: people think
that we're in Iraq to spread democracy and
rebuild the Middle East. They think we're The
Good Guys. But the longer we keep patting
ourselves on the back, the more we tell ourselves
that the Iraqi resistance is a bunch of evil
freedom-haters, the deeper we'll sink into this quagmire.

It's time to get real.

1. I agree.
I never bought the bushie nonsense about the resistance being nothing but saddam supporters, outside insurgents, terrorists and now , believe it or not, gangsters. These people are patriots fighting against an overwhelming force that has invaded and occupied their homeland. The longer we stay the greater the resistance will be.

2. This is wretched:
(snip) "U.S. troops put their boots on the back of men's heads as they lay face down, forcing their foreheads to the ground," the Associated Press' Scheherezade Faramarzi writes about the procedure used by U.S. troops during sweeps. "There is no greater humiliation...because Islam forbids putting the forehead on the ground except in prayer." Amnesty International says the U.S. subjects Iraqi prisoners to "cruel, inhuman or degrading" conditions. (snip/...)

Great article, Rebel_with_a_cause.

3. a very good point to push...
really. This has been my position all along. We invaded a soverign nation that was no threat to us whatsoever. This is a form of expansionism and colonialism, both of which are illegal by international standards.

And if the shoe were on the other foot, if another nation (say, er, like the British in the Revolutionary War) try to colonialize the states, these people know darn well that we would resist occupation in the same manner that the Iraqis are doing now.

4. I'm betting most conservatives love the movie "Red Dawn".
They should watch it again and think about Iraq today, and consider "Who are the Iraqis and who are the Americans in this scenario?"

5. gotta hand it to ted, he tells it like it is in plain english...
now if only more could read him... hopefully the rest of the media starts waking up, ASAP.

what we are doing now and what japan and germany did during wwII are uncanny.

the imperial japanese even used the term 'ILLEGAL COMBATANT' in china for the chinese who resisted.

i am just worried that the reinforcements will be machines...

:'(

peace
