British army spokesman Captain Hisham Halawi said five bodies were found after the incident. A doctor at an Amara hospital, giving his name only as Assad, said earlier six people were killed and seven were injured.
Police said they opened fire after the protesters began throwing stones at the provincial government's headquarters.
Halawi said British troops brought in to help restore order fired at two protesters they suspected were armed with grenades.
