Why laws against flag-burning also subvert right-wing interests |
|
Because the value of a symbol is derived from the free exercise of those who respond to it. To make a law against flag-burning is to use force to make the symbol seem more appreciated than it really is.
People who then show respect for the flag will always do so with it known that the absence of an equally fervent opposition is because a gun (the law) is being used to prevent the opposition from expressing itself. The symbol is thus devalued for all - supporter and detractor alike.
