Today's Stars and Stripes has an editorial by Haught called "An ungodly approach to co-opting Jesus"
"Everything that Jesus stood for seems opposed by Republicans now in control of Washington. Jesus said, "blessed are the peacemakers" - yet the Bush administration was hell-bent for war in Iraq, using fictitious alarms to rouse public support. A year before starting the war, Bush swaggered privately in the WH and said, "F--- Saddam. We're taking him out."
I couldn't find the above editorial at the Gazette's site, so I've posted this, printed yesterday in the Gazette.
James A. Haught
Looking back at ‘the lies we bought’
ODDLY, most Americans seem untroubled by snowballing evidence that Bush administration leaders deceived America into needless war in Iraq.
Patriotism — “my country, right or wrong” — evidently makes millions of people support any war their president launches. But that’s unthinking citizenship. Serious Americans should try to understand why the world’s only superpower unleashed its awesome force on a decrepit little nation, killing thousands.
