Defense seeks more pollution exemptions:~ The Defense Department, having won congressional exemptions from three major environmental laws in the past years, is gearing up to ask to be exempted from three more. Two years in a row, Congress denied the Defense Deptment's requests for exemptions from the Clean Air Act and two toxic-waste laws. Last month the Pentagon asked the White House to let it fight those battles once more, according to documents obtained by the Los Angeles Times. Congressional opponents say the proposed exemptions would cause more damage than those the Defense Dept has already received from the Marine Mammal and the Migratory Bird Treaty acts. The previous exemptions threaten wildlife, they point out, but the new ones would endanger human health. The military argues it needs the three exemptions so that pollution laws do not get in the way of training exercises and other war preparations. Just a short blip in hometown newspaper no link for it sorry.
