Protests over the firing by Cirque du Soleil of an HIV-positive gymnast are following the show to Costa Mesa, California where Cirque will open Friday night.

The popular acrobatic circus has been the scene of demonstrations since it fired Matthew Cusick (pictured) last July. Lambda Legal is suing Cirque in federal court on Cusick's behalf. (story)

Cusick spent several months training for his acrobatic role in the world famous troupe and went through extensive medical exams with Cirque du Soleil's own doctor. Cusick informed the doctor of his status and the medial notes said Cusick was a "healthy athlete" who "should be able to perform."

On the other an attorney named Delgadillo claims that Cirque fired Cusick solely because he has HIV (which Cirque has repeatedly admitted is the case).
