ATLANTA (Reuters) - In a sign of the difficulty President Bush (news - web sites) faces as he tries to win black support for his reelection, several hundred protesters loudly booed him on Thursday as he laid a wreath at the grave of civil rights leader Martin Luther King.


"Bush go home" and "peace not war" the predominantly black crowd of protesters shouted from behind a barrier of buses, as Bush paid tribute to King on the 75th anniversary of his birth.


Bush wants to improve his standing among black voters this reelection year, after winning less than 10 percent of the African-American vote in 2000.


The president was accompanied by King's widow Coretta Scott King, and sister, Christine King Farris. He placed the wreath, bowed his head for a few moments, and departed without speaking or facing the protesters as the boos from the crowd increased.

I thought that was despicable.

Buses have symbolic importance in the civil rights movement because of Rosa Parks and the Montgomery bus boycott, and the Republicans misused buses to stifle black protesters at a civil rights event.

It's a one-two punch where first a judge says they can only protest on the other side of the street, and then the Republicans park buses in front of them so they can't be seen.

The busses parked bumper-to-bumber then make great blockades to keep the not-so-adoring serfs at bay, and out of earshot.

If she had turned her back on him, or made a statement later that he was not welcome, perhaps I would have respected her stance. But I would have turned my back on a tyrant, traitor, and murderer, someone who is the antithesis of her husband's words.

Look at all of the stories that are coming out on this. Look at the photos. Look at the massive backlash Bush experienced by this.

He sought a photo op. He wanted to make sure that the photo include the flowers, the grave, the widow.

Ms. King could have made some kind of point by snubbing him. She also could have made a statement later. But...by allowing him to "sieze the moment," take a step back and look at how much this has damaged him. I think Bush's level of support among MLK's staunchest support base has been made abundantly clear, and the best part is that he did this to himself by not controlling his ego and arrogance. He failed to realize that the American people, regardless of race, have not been placed on this Earth for the sole purpose of his own personal advancement. If I can see this, can we really say that Ms. King couldn't?

I respectfully beg to differ, too. I feel that Ms. King made a statement, a very eloquent one. Look at the papers today. Turn on the TV. Surf the Web. That's her statement. She honored her husband with that statement. She retained 100% of her dignity and Bush is holding his...well, you get the picture.

Aaron Brown referred to civil rights activists as "hecklers", and only showed footage of Bush placing the wreath.

14. I know he prides himself on not "giving a crap"

about protesters and hecklers. Just this week, Jose Maria Aznar (the president of Spain) made the comment that Bush was "an emperor" and his image in Europe was beyond hope. I think Bush said something to the effect that, "it will not change my policies". Meaning, I don't care.

Still, every once in a while it's got to get him. Right in the heart. He knows that no matter where he goes, the minute his foot touches terra firma, there will be people greeting him with shouts, signs and angry faces. Everywhere on this God's Green Earth, he will be met with this. I promise you that at some point, it would get to me.

I would start to wonder who I was, and what the hell I was doing. So today, once again, he has to face the bitter reality: the vast majority of the 6 billion people who live on earth hate the man. They despise his policies, his arrogance, his flagrant disdain for the rest of the world.
