I was recently reminded of how much Bostonians swore when I saw Mystic River, with all of the foul language and all that. But it wasn't that it necessarily stood out--it sounded normal to me. But I lived in the Los Angeles area for 15 years, and didn't hear as much as when I moved back home last February.

Some people use swearing for its shock value, others use it as though it were just another word, with nothing behind it except want of a better word. I'm sure that the East Coast usage of the word "fuck" is a lot greater than the Midwest, and probably the same is true of the far western part of the U.S. However, hearing someone say "fuck" for example, is certainly not as attention grabbing and foul as derogatory comments aimed directly at a specific person, which are demeaning and far more coarse, IMHO.

Turns out, this email was sent from the WV Dept. of Transportation email system. Even though this is not technically hate mail, it expresses an opinion that may not reflect the feeling of every citizen of the state of West Virginia (of which I'm one). And to send this type of mail on a publicly-funded email system, is implicitly speaking for the citizenry of the state.

Secretary Van Kirk, I urge you to limit the use of state email to express a personal opinion, when it only reflects the views of a few in priveleged positions. Not only is it a waste of my tax money, it does not reflect my personal views on the subject.
