The right won't sit out an election. They know that would mean a Democrat in office. No matter how mad they may be at Bush, they hate Democrats. They will turn out and vote.

17. The 'Right' is not monolithic.

There are still a lot of old-fashioned main-stream, Main Street Repubs out there. They are conservative, but not lunatics.

The Gingrich Revolution was an alliance that pulled together incompatible fringe groups (Libertarian, Religious Fundies, White Supremacists, Gun Nuts, Militas) with traditional Repubs.

It was always fragile. I think it survived as long as it did only because Weyrich, Gingrich, et al were able to intimidate the press and the Dems.

and many of us voted Green. Major ooooooooops. Clinton/Gore didn't mess anything up, and G.W. Bush was running for Pres. Ross Perot pealed off an enormous number of "balance-the-budget" conservatives. This isn't to say that the same thing can or will happen with the repubs. this year; it simply means that progressives may hold tightly to their ideals (and then get their faces kicked in) and that there is, in fact, an historical example that answers your above hypothetical.

No, actually, they don't support the Chimp in Chief. Bob Barr was vocal and active in opposing the Patriot Act and the unlimited detentions at Guantanomo. Others have been alienated by the Chimps irresponsible fiscal behavior. Before you issue a blanket statement against conservatives, how much tangible opposition has Chimpy had from either House or Senate Democrats? Daschle and Hillary have enabled him in every endeavor.

..."true conservatives" are typically even worse than Bush. They are basically complaining that he's too liberal! They will NEVER vote for a Democrat. However, just them staying home on election day is good enough for me.
