Students walk out on Jeb Bush MLK Address

But a ceremony In Tallahassee, Florida, Monday wasn't as peaceful. About a dozen students walked out as President Bush's brother -- Gov. Jeb Bush -- spoke at historically black Florida A&M University.

In a statement, the students criticized his views on affirmative action, among other things.

The governor said the students have every right to express their views. He also said Florida A&M's success "could not have occurred without the struggles that Dr. King and many others a generation ago undertook."

1. MLK's message

Dr. King's message is freely exploited by politicians and corporations everywhere, even while they turn around and violate every position Dr. King ever argued for. Jeb Bush doing this is nothing new, although I applaud the students for making a statement about it.

I don't think it's a coincidence that Dr. King was assassinated after he moved from civil rights to speaking out about poverty and the Vietnam War.

4. I would respect a politician more

if they quoted malcom X, mumia, paris, tupac, etc. instead of pulling out safe quotes from MLK. Don't get me wrong, I think he was a great man. I think he's rolling in his grave the way his legacy is being exploited.

9. No! They should stay, stand up and GLARE at Bush

It will destroy his feable ability to talk, and they MUST NOT LEAVE the building they have a right to be in. That would be symbolic of giving the keys over to the republicans. They need to show strength, solidarity, and that they will see the face of true democracy returned to the chambers.

The governor must be heartbroken that he and his kind failed to stop Dr. King's generation before it gained it's limited success. He and his kind failed, but lord, don't you know, they wish they could return this country to that age of slavery and injustice and apartheid.

11. Boycott would have been better

I respect what they did, and I do get the point. However, it does seem silly somehow to show up just to leave. :) Stand outside and protest or boycott, heck show up inside and protest even.
