(I heard this story several times between 68 and 72.)
Many precincts met in houses; in some places, it was nearly impossible to find out where your precinct caucus was taking place.
IA was not first in the nation then; I don't know when it was. Definitely after the McCarthy surprise in NH and LBJ withdrawing from the race.
Many younger democrats were upset, opposed to the VN war, etc.
In one (college) town, many people were energized and wanted to attend. The old guard did not expect many to show up; for them it was politics as usual.
At at least one precinct meeting, there was some attempt to keep the 'new' ones out. People went in through the windows.
From what I heard, democratic politics in IA were permanently changed after the 'caucus of 68.'
