churchill's cursing parrot, age 104, found alive
Edited on Mon Jan-19-04 06:18 PM by buycitgo
she used to curse a lot, including swearing a lot about Hitler?

moveon.org, does this ring any bells?

wonder if she's available for work.

they showed her on CNN; looked like a Mccaw, maybe....lost lots of feathers, but looked awfully good for 104.

I have a 108 year old GM, who looks not that much worse, actually.

EDIT, courtesy of BlueEyedSon, down the row here

the article, heh

http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/allnews/content_objectid=13832640_method=full_siteid=50143_headline=-F----THE-NAZIS--SAYS-CHURCHILL-S-PARROT-name_page.html

SHE WAS at Winston Churchill's side during Britain's darkest hour. And now Charlie the parrot is 104 years old...and still cursing the Nazis.

Her favourite sayings were "F*** Hitler" and "F*** the Nazis". And even today, 39 years after the great man's death, she can still be coaxed into repeating them with that unmistakable Churchillian inflection.

Many an admiral or peer of the realm was shocked by the tirade from the bird's cage during crisis meetings with the PM.

But it always brought a smile to the war leader's face.

3. Don't know
but some species of parrot do live a very long time, at least as long as humans, so pet birds often outlive their "owners." 104 sounds very old though, but I'm sure some DU bird experts will fill us in.

5. Napoleon's budgie is still alive and well, nursing plans of revenge
Hitler's beloved parakeet Norman died of indifference late last year. A sad blow to all celebrity bird-watchers.

8. not sure about parrots, but turtles can (theoretically) live forever
CLAIM: Turtles never die of old age.

ANSWER: TRUE. Turtles exhibit what is known as 'negligible senescence.' In other words, unlike humans, they do not continue to age once their bodies reach maturity. In theory, they might be able to live forever, though in practice this would never happen. Injury, predation, or disease eventually kill them. But turtles have been known to live beyond 150 years without exhibiting any signs of old age. Fish and amphibians also share this enviable characteristic.

12. a mad scientist, somewhere, somehow, MUST be working on this
"I will create a hybrid race of fishlike turtle-men that will LIVE FOREVER - and together, we will RULE THE WORLD! MUAHAHHAHA! MAD? MAD?!!? One is allllways considered mad when one perfects something others cannot grasp."

13. So ...
So in theory, a zoo should be able to keep those giant tortoises alive well over 300 years with good diet and exercise?

BTW, I'd love to hear some of the birds choicer phrases. Just imagine if Nixon had a parrot. Would Nixons bird be able to outswear Churchill's.

N: "Goddam that those Kennedy C*ckS*ckers!!!"
C: "F*ck Hitler. F*ck the bugger up his bloody backside"

16. Nixon could have trained it to say the same thing he always did about.....
Canadian PM Pierre Trudeau, to whom he reportedly ALWAYS referred to as, "that asshole, Trudeau."
Never Prime Minister Trudeau; not Pierre; never just Trudeau, but always, "that asshole, Trudeau"

urban legend? perhaps, but I've read it many times

9. No expert here but google found this
http://www.petplace.com/articles/artShow.asp?artID=196

Says "over 50" is possible, 104 is sure "over 50" but double??? I'm thinking this might be a hoax.

7. I was half paying attention, but........
they said that someone who knew the details was able to trace the parrot down

they had current videotape of the bird, and said that it used to squawk out epithets WRT Hitler during the war, and was generally dirtymouthed, but doesn't actually say that much anymore.

god, if it could only be trained to respond to "Bush"

I knew it was theoretically possible for them to live this long, but I've never heard of one doing so. Go, Charlie!
