Bush's Approval Sinking

After rising in public support following the capture of Saddam Hussein, the President gives his State of the Union message next week with a decidedly less positive audience. His approval rating of 50% matches his lowest approval ratings ever, and the largest number ever – 45% - disapprove.

This decline (from 60% approval the week after Saddam’s capture) comes after former Treasury Secretary Paul O’Neill’s criticisms of the Administration in a book and in interviews, and after continuing attacks on American troops in Iraq.

The president’s overall job approval ties with the lowest ratings he has received since taking office, and his disapproval rating is at its highest. Several other evaluations of the president -- such as his ability to handle an international crisis, and perceptions of the respect he receives from foreign leaders -- have fallen back to pre-9/11 levels after having risen sharply in the wake of the terrorist attacks.

Bush’s highest job approval rating was in October 2001, when 90% approved of the job he was doing as president.

1. I have mixed feelings about this

On one hand, it's good that Americans are catching on to the fraud. On the other hand, I'm afraid the Bush gang will resort to desperate measures to restore their slipping popularity and something like Seattle will blow up.

Bush will find some way to use it to remind the American people that the threat still exists and that only he can fight it.

2. It unnerves

I have thought it and read it. My father a retired Defense Department Employee is nervous about this. He thinks they will go to drastic measures. The neos want our fear to continue.

3. I love that his approval ratings are down

but surely there is an October surprise waiting for us. Man, I wish the most powerful people in this country weren't so damn evil. We can't get complacent, we have to keep fighting and keep registering new Democrats.

5. I think two things are happening...

It's slowly sinking in that things aren't going so well. Without an obvious crisis, it takes a while for the deterioration in jobs and living standards to get through. Everyone would prefer to think positive, but too many people are seing the job problem first hand, and the states and cities are making a major case for their problems being caused by national problems. Iraq isn't going so well either, and that's starting to sink in after the initial euphoria over the quick win. Shrub has not given adequate answers for any of this.

The other thing is the Democratic primary season taking off and these guys jumping all over Shrub and getting the word out that things aren't that rosy. It adds another level of attention to the problems and Shrub's defects.
