If there was a race between a traditional Democrat - pro-Social Security, pro-Medicare, pro-Union, but who was a conservative Christian, and was seen as anti-choice and anti-LGBT, and a traditional Republican - pro-market, pro-privatization, pro-tax cuts, pro-corporate, but was socially liberal, pro-LGBT and pro-choice, who would you vote for?

3. This will be interesting

I have always felt that DU was, first and foremost, a cultural-left message board. I have tried to argue for more culturally "centrist" policies and a progressive economic agenda which, I feel, is more in tune with the majority of this country. But, others feel just the opposite and I respect that - just disagree. Will be interesting to watch this poll.....good idea....thanks for posting it!

Yes. I've been here for a long time, and done polls like this before, and quite frankly, most of the people here are more pro-market Libertarian types than traditional labor Democrats.

You'd be surprised at how many pro-corporate, "free trade" privatizers there are on here.

This will change as the outsourcing and layoffs continue, but of course by then it will be too late. The right to choose will be affirmed, and no one will be able to afford to get an abortion or pre-natal care. Gays will be able to get married, but they won't be able to afford a honeymoon - this is progress?

Zell Miller is no "economic liberal".....he has a very rightwing economic record as a senator. I think a better example is Harold Ford, Jr. or Senator Lieberman. Both of which I would take over the hypothetical Republican.

I have thought this was the case. I always notice how threads that address economic "bread and butter" issues fall by the wayside fairly fast, where threads that address the social or cultural issues fill up with posts. "Libertarian Underground"....that's pretty funny! (But also probably closer to the truth than we'd care to admit!!)

I'm quite sure Lieberman's record on the abortion question is very pro-choice (and his record on gay rights is also very progressive, I think). And I suspect the same is true of Ford, though I'm not as familiar with his record.

12. It's partially a matter of phrasing.

If you'd just said that the Democrat was a social conservative and left it at that, then there would have been no contest. But when you say Anti-choice and Anti-GLBT, I get ugly mental pictures of Ralph Reid and that Fred Phelps fucker. The way you ask a question makes a lot of difference in a poll.

I was thinking of someone more neutral and pragmatic than suggested. There are a lot of gray areas out there, you know. Just because a person defines himself as a Christian conservative doesn't necessarily mean that he hates all gay people and he runs around screaming "baby killer." Kind of like all liberals don't smoke pot while their contemplating how to get hold of everyone's guns.

I had read somewhere that people with lower incomes tend to be economically liberal but socially conservative.

People with higher incomes tend to be more socially liberal but economically conservative.

Judging from the results so far, Screw the poor, Get out of my bedroom seems to be winning.
