"I want to thank Portugal (for 1 soldier and a pistol) Norway (for 2 shipbuilders) and Ukraine (for 4 non combat soldiers?)

who is this clown kidding, we pay these countries millions so they throw us a token soldier just so Bush can pad the total of the "coalition of the willing" in the SOTU?

5. My household was cracking up...
That was his "coalition"

The entire speech, we were all sitting there saying:

"These guys must think that we're dumb and we believe this shit"

"They have to think were dumbshits"

It was incredible.

17. It was the most patently dishonest rendering in a
patently dishonest speech.

Of course, he has a pack of clever sophists constructing these substanceless little arguments, and O - my shining stars and streamers - didn't the Republican side just eat it up. The strategy of accumulation, listing country after country - as if that formal feature itself were a substantial refutation of the critique - is pure style, but we know pure style is effective. Rather than doing a comparison of say, the expenditures in lives and treasure put out by the people of the United States of America, through the public coffers, with the expenditures of say, those countries he listed - COMBINED - Mr. Bush merely listed the countries: How could you say that we're not internationalizing? Here is an extended list of countries.

Of course, the strategy seems pertinent, and even gets a laugh for its clever stylistic construction, but it answers nothing, since the critique never denied that there were other countries marginally involved, but that these countries weren't substantially involved to the extent necessary or even to the extent possible. Oh, but that requires patience and logic and careful study. that requires thought and consideration and analysis. That requires questioning and truth-seeking and decision-making. Better to just string a few words together for emotional effect, as if they constituted a refutation in and of themselves. How clever we all are, we speech-writers....

19. okay, I really need to make a Hitler reference here
History buffs will recall that following Munich, FDR sent a letter to Hitler asking him to assert that he had no aggressive intentions against a supplied list of European states.

Hitler replied in the US House of Representatives...oops, I mean the Reichstag...reeling off the list of countries to howls of laughter from the puppet legislature. He really cracked the boys up by guaranteeing non-aggression against the United States.

Tonight was creepy. As soon as he did the little roll-call of countries to the snickers of the Republicans, my mind flashed on that Hitler speech. It was uncannily similar.

I hope he didn't mention Canada among the "allies." We may be friends to Americans, but no friends to * and his cronies.

Pleeeeease vote this idiot out in November!

23. The sacrifice of Iceland and the Marshall Islandss
Wow, look at this list of sacrifice:
http://www.geocities.com/pwhce/willing.html

United States of America
* Australia
Asia:
Japan
South Korea
Singapore
Philippines
Afghanistan
Azerbaijan
Uzbekistan
Georgia
*Marshall Islands
Micronesia
Solomon Islands
Mongolia
*Palau
Tonga

Africa and the Middle East:
Kuwait
Eritrea
Ethiopia
Uganda
Rwanda
Angola
South America:
El Salvador
Colombia
Nicaragua
Costa Rica
Dominican Republic
Honduras
This list does not include Taiwan, (which is not recognised as a country due to international deference to the People's Republic of China), or Israel, which supports the action against Iraq but is not part of the "Coalition of the Willing".
Malta and Cyprus were also signatories to earlier statements in favour of action against Iraq.
About a dozen other countries are said to have been added to the list in confidence.
