LONGBOAT KEY -- Despite long odds, three Democrats insisted Tuesday that they can defeat powerful incumbent Republican Rep. Katherine Harris in this year's District 13 congressional race.
C.J. Czaia and Jan Schneider, both lawyers, and Manatee Community College professor Floyd Jay Winters took turns at a Democratic luncheon making pitches for their campaigns to prevent Harris from winning a second term.
On issues ranging from health care to education, the war in Iraq and the economy, the Democrats said their philosophies were more in sync with area voters than Harris' and President Bush's.
"I'm on a mission to add one more to the (nation's) 9 million unemployed," Winters said. "We must get rid of Katherine Harris."
