Oh, joy! Looks like the Senate thinks the wages of Americans are STILL too high for us to be "competitive" with third world labor. THey have an amnesty even more "generous" than the Bush amnesty. Looks like American citizen wages are headed down, down, down, my fellow citizens. Break out the champagne! The higher the supply of labor here in America, the lower the wages Americans earn! Don't you just LOVE economics!

Two prominent senators crossed party lines yesterday to propose a bipartisan alternative to President Bush's immigration initiative, including the prospect of permanent legal status for undocumented workers who fulfill residency, employment and other requirements.
The proposal by Democratic leader Tom Daschle of South Dakota and Republican Chuck Hagel of Nebraska differs in key respects from Bush's plan, but they pledged to work with the White House to ensure passage of a new immigration law. "We can tighten and bring common sense to a patchwork of immigration law that makes no sense," Hagel said at a news conference as he and Daschle introduced their bill.
The Daschle-Hagel proposal would allow illegal immigrants and their families to become "invested stakeholders" in the United States, putting them on track for permanent residence and eventual citizenship if they meet some requirements.
They would have to live in this country for five years and work here for four years, including one year after enactment of the bill. They would have to pass national-security and criminal-background checks, pay federal taxes, demonstrate a knowledge of English and U.S. civics and pay a $1,000 fine for having lived in the country illegally.
In addition, the senators' proposal would remove limits on the number of spouses and minor children of legal permanent residents who can get visas to come to the United States and apply for residency, treating them like the spouses and minor children of U.S. citizens.
