2. It makes me wonder

which demographic group is so anti gay civil rights...as the country goes in this 50/50 direction..
Makes me think its my mother's generation (over 60) who will be gone soon and hopefully we will see some generational changes occur..
Im 52 and I hope changes happen soon. On the other hand, I march with many people in their 70s and 80s who are marvelous peace activists and gay rights advocates..

9. No one can ever tell me how forbidding same sex marriage

strengthens heterosexual marriage? If Massachusetts or any other state recognizes same sex marriage or civil unions, does that make it more likely that my wife is going to leave me and marry a woman - or that I will leave her and marry a man? Wouldn't one of us leave anyway if we were inclined that way? Just doesn't make sense to me. If anything, I would think that recognizing same sex marriage might encourage folks who were so inclined to establish committed relationships with someone that met their physical needs rather than try to repress their feelings in order to engage in a straight marriage that is doomed to fail. So we would have fewer "false" marriages and more "true" marriages (gay and straight). Am I missing something? Why don't we hear this argument more?

11. Gay marriage STRENGTHENS marriage

The more people who get married, to me, strenghtens marriage. Or at least to me.

Another argument I've heard is that marriage is solely for procreation, thus reserving it for heterosexuals.

A red herring, I say. What about the straight married couples who either don't want to have kids or can't? Are their marriages automatically invalid?

12. I think it may be jealousy

Maybe I'm off base but I know that me and my partner are MUCH happier than a lot of traditionally married couples. We genuinely enjoy each other, are very much in love after all this time and it shows to anyone who spends any time with.

I've gotten the impression at times that it royally p*sses some of my straight married co-workers and friends off that we are happy together. I think it goes against the stereotype that has been thrust on the general public of the bed-hopping gay guys and that makes them very uncomfortable for some reason.

Think about it - one of the main reasons that us gay guys have been demonized is the stereotype of loose and easy promiscuous sex. Me and my love are totally committed and anyone who sees us (and the many other couples just like us) cannot use the promiscuity argument against homosexuality. And for the government to acknowledge civil unions and gay marriage, this would take yet another weapon out of the haters arsenals.

21. You are probably right--

It may take a lot of time and effort to get the general public behind the idea of gay marriage. I have heard some conservative pundits claim that the idea is geared toward trying to secure benefits above and beyond what a straight married couple might be entitled to. I don't know if there is anything to this claim or not-- but I will say this: There better not be.

Anyone who tries to play the system for personal advantage is hurting the overall cause.

Actually, I've been here a very long time. I just post very infrequently, although I'm very fond of this site. I spend most of my time reading latest breaking news items and others' comments.

My first goal is to help my gay and lesbian community here at DU, when I can, with anything that I can add to a discussion. Nothing, absolutely nothing, makes me prouder of this site than my fellow brothers and sisters. Although I've been offended by a LOT of comments from ignorant, straight DUers, I keep returning, hoping for understanding and bridges.

One thing that I have learned here is that, just as in politics, you have to keep repeating the same message, over and over and over and over again. For example, I keep seeing asinine statements that gay men have a choice, that, after I posted several statements to the contrary from the two leading mental health organizations, the American Psychological and Psychiatric Associations.

Anyway, thanks again for your warm welcome. Stay well.
