Clark was on the first half of the show and of course he asked about Moore's comment ("The General versus the Deserter that is the debate"). Clark gave about the same answer as he did in the last debate but Russert kept on it. 4 quesitons in a row.

I am not posting this because of Clark's non-response response but becasue of this, later during the "round table" discussion Brokaw couldn't believe that clark had not "killed that snake" a week ago. Broder said that he asked Clark about at the event and Clark wouldn't kill it. I figured Brokaw was going to dismiss it and Clark with it but then he said the quote above.

Much of the round table discussion was about perception, if Clinton or now Edwards had misspelled "potato" it would have been a non event but Quayle doing it provided material to back up the already commonly held beliefs about him. They were saying that the SCREAM speech by Dean was much the same, adding validity to the "mean" perception. Russert also cited Gore's saying that he invented the internet. My eyes rolled (he never said that) but then it hit me what Clark seemed to be doing:

Clark doesn't want that to be stuck to him BUT he doesn't want it to die either. As has been pointed out here at DU that technically W probably wasn't AWOL or a deserter. That's not the point, the point is that it is in households and at the diner/coffee shop counter. This could be like Gore's internet quote. It doesn't have to be true to get sunk into discussions.

spot in the NATIONAL GUARD during Vietnam, and that he wasn't flying fighter planes in a war zone. Believe it or not, that's news to alot of the people I talk to.

You're absolutely right- things like this put them on the defensive. Faced with things like this, even a fawning corporate media can't do much good. They only repeat the charge when they deny it.

Everybody's afraid to come out an say it, so Clark will happily let the "rumor" float on the breeze like Forest Gump's feather. And eventually, so many Talking Whores will be speaking it that news junkies right and left will be typing "Bush AWOL" into Google.

Clark seems to be aware of Sandy Berger saying repeatedly that he said just about that to Condi during the transition meetings.

Russert pulled that one right out of W's playbook, mentioning them in the same sentence.

Gore never said "I invented the internet" or "I was the basis for Love Story" or"I discovered Love Canal" those, as you know, where plants by Rove and conditional for local reporters to get interviews with W. They also were a running joke on both campaign trails and made there way into mainstream press stories.

I don't know how much of it is true but the story I remember was that supposedly drugs were also being run out of a small airport in Arkansas too and that Poppa's private phone number was found in someone's wallet after they (Seal?) died.

As I stated above it's not about what is the actual truth but what is perceived and what is discussed. This also might have been a shot at Jennings, I would guess that there is some friendly professional rivalry there.

to ferret out the truth on this issue. Once the allegation is on the table the responsibility lies with the press to dig for the facts and present them to the public.
I guess that would be in a world where the press was an independent organ of the society and not a tool of the ruling party.
