The Daily Show - R.I.P.?

Its finally happened. I dreaded the day. The Daily Show is now mentionied in the same breath as network late night TV. So much publicity and exposure. The Daily Show is now Mainstream.

Experience has taught us that any significant voice emerging in the public discourse is destined for pop success and critical failure when it becomes consumable by the masses just like any other Big Mac fast food meal.

I believe that we will see a short period or over-exposure, probably through this election, and then the show will be turned into a cash cow for its investors. Sadly, the the message will be diluted to equate the "norm".

3. Um, forgive my ignorance, but

are you saying the Daily Show is going late night on one of the networks? Or are you saying that it's just becoming really popular?

If the latter is the case, there's no problem. They have great writers and Jon Stewart is one of the most intelligent comedians out there. Often times his ad-libs are funnier than the actual joke.

Lewis Black is hilarious and the correspondents are terrific. And if you're worried b/c this is an election year, that's when they do their best. "Indecision 2000" was when I first started watching.

2. on the other hand,

it will at least remain true to form when it first launches, bringing entertaining-yet-truthful news to the masses during the critical months just prior to the election.

if it wanes after that, that would indeed be a pity, but (a) it will have done much for this election and (b) it will inspire copycat shows, and point out to sponsors that liberal shows can attract audiences, too.

let's just hope that jon stewart doesn't go the way of dennis miller....

19. Stewart heading Miller's way...

...IMHO. When has he done anything truly outspoken or "dangerous" that supports the liberal viewpoint? If it weren't for Lewis Black and the two Steven/Stephens, this would be another blah-blah pseudo-liberal show. When Stewart has on a person from the left, he rarely gives the person time to say anything meaningful. Instead, he cracks a joke that nullifies what the person was attempting to bring up, or he switches it nervously to another--less dangerous--topic. As far as we're concerned, the DS is on the "can't bear to watch it anymore" list in our house. With friends like Stewart, who needs Miller or any of the other righties?

4. Jon Stewart says (I believe in Newsweek)

that he wants it to stay on cable, and he would stay posssibly even if given an attractive offer (he has apparently been offered several things). He pretty much wants to stay through the election--which is EXCELLENT news.

after the election. The Newsweek article is excellent and shines the light on those we don't see on camera that make the show work.

The daily show has been a "hit" from day one. It is viewed by more people than any show on faux.

Not sure that is a factual statement considering how popular "The Simpsons" is but I will grant that the Daily Show has higher ratings than Fox News, CNN, MSNBC, and CNBC combined. ;-)

John has lost it. I watched him the other day... He's just not funny anymore. He was doing some lame "aye aye aye aye" thing. Maybe there was a 3 year old watching? Actually that would probably be more scary than funny.
