bush started talking tough about Iraq and Saddam as soon as he got into office. At the say time the political pundits were saying that bush had seen his father's ratings fall after the first Gulf War was over and that Jr wasn't going to make the same mistakes that his father did. I figured he'd find some excuse to invade Iraq so he could call himself a war-time president and maintain his power. I never dreamed he'd be as successful as he's been (at least in the eyes of the general public).

It is my opinion that Iraq was one of the reasons Bush was swept into office in the first place. Ask yourself this: Would John McCain have made a better president and was he or was he not a better Republican candidate than Shrub? McCain was a true war hero and i think he would have been MUCH more reserved about using military force than our current Nitwit In Chief. (I would have preferred Gore of course) This war on Iraq always was and always will be about control of the resources and market share. Just like EVERY WAR since the beginning of time.

I was on DU when IWR was being debated, and a large portion of posters were quite clear that they did not know whether or not Saddam had WMD's. Many thought he did because WE SOLD THEM TO IRAQ!!!

Now, EVERYONE seems to have known Saddam had no WMD's.

It was the main reason for some for voting for * in the first place; rumors are that a promise of some sort was made to Ahmad Chalabi's group. 9/11 was like manna from heaven to this administration; gave them the excuse they needed to carry out what they had been planning long ago.

35. It was pretty clear to me that * and co. were hell-bent to start a war

with Iraq no matter what. In fact Bush acted just like a teenager who's desperate to do something, for a reason he can't reveal. Oil and oilmen's influence, sure, and the threat to switch to the Euro for payments, but I still halfway wonder if there isn't also an additional,secret reason that won't come out for a generation, if ever.

I think some of the Dem. congresscritters also knew that he'd go in with or without the IWR. If they voted for it with this knowledge, you can't really hold them responsible for the war and its casualties. They couldn't have changed things no matter how they voted.

As for the "chemical and biological weapons;" yeah, I thought it was possible Saddam had a small trove of them. That didn't change my belief that going into Iraq was wrong and crazy. After all, there was no evidence that he planned to use them on us now, or in the future, or was supplying them to anybody who would. And if you want to be literal, even tear gas and pepper spray are chemical weapons.

I was disappointed with the Dems who voted for the IWR, the more so since reportedly their calls and letters were running between 20 to 1 and 100 to 1 against it. Still, I think their reasoning may have been like the above, figuring it wouldn't make any practical difference anyway, and that a "yes" vote would take the issue off the table for the 2002 elections. Of course, it didn't work.

I read somewhere that prior to invading Kuwait, Saddam sent feelers to Bush to get approval to invade Kuwait and got it.

Once Saddam did, then Bush attacks him. Hmmm.
