My Bush-loving co-worker admits embracing ignorance!
From his home e-mail, he sent me the "Robin Williams" garbage.

I replied back that I didn't have to read it, I knew that the only part actually said by RW was the bit about the Statue of Liberty.

That was before he got in to work. Once he got in, I told him that I got his e-mail, and that I replied to it. I also pointed out that it had been debunked (except for the S. of L. part), and that he should do a little research before passing on that crap.

His response? "I don't have to do any research."

I said: "Well, you don't want to look like an idiot."

Him: "I won't look like an idiot."

I explained to him the 180 of the 1973 hippie draft-dodging Charlie Daniels to the current pro-war (armchair general) 2003 Charlie Daniels (after he expressed confusion over who C.D. was, which I took as pure B.S.).

He spouted the line: "Oh, a person can't change his mind?"

I said: "He can, if he's a Republican."

Him: "What, a Democrat doesn't change his mind?"

Walking away in disgust, I said: "Sure they do, but they get attacked."

This guy once almost turned purple in the early days of the Monica Lewinsky debacle, trying to convince me that BC admitted it (well before the televised apology). After I called him on that, when BC was charged with covering it up, he denied any such conversation.

Normally, this guy is okay, no wingnut, but he does have a tendency to get upset when his boy wonder is trying to be held accountable.

1. they are poud of it
This is the essence of the problem: they take a completely postmodern view of reality. They do not believe there are facts and falsehoods. To the Bushies, whomever screams loudest and drowns out other points of view is telling the "truth."

2. He is working overtime to maintain a secure state of cognitive dissonance.
Otherwise, he'll have to start thinking for himself. ...Now that could be a scary thing.

3. This is the problem, mho
My in-laws are Bushies. I had one glass of wine too many and this conversation followed

Me: Bush is destroying our country.
FIL(father in-law): Would you rather have Clinton?
Me: YES
MIL(mother in-law): He had no ethics
My husband: CLINTON had no ethics?! You aren't suggesting BUSH does? Which lie affects us directly? Sex or War?
MIL: I guess all politicians are the same.

Later my husband couldn't understand his parents defense of Bush.

I think it is very simple. Clinton lied about something which is an easy soundbite for the disengaged. Sex.

Bush lied about things which demand the public pay attention to policy. Clearly many in this country do not. Those of us who do pay the toll.

5. Better Yet

"Bush lied about things which demand the public pay attention to policy. Clearly many in this country do not. Those of us who do pay the toll."

Actually, those of us in uniform pay the higher toll.

Of course, those who were not "of us" in Iraq but happened to be in the way paid the highest toll. But for the sake of arguing against rightwingers you have to limit yourself to "us" and not "them" or you have sided with the enemy against "us".

6. Very true.
Sadly the ones in uniform are paying a deadly price for collective ignorance.
