Established in 1933, CropLife America (formerly the American Crop Protection Association) represents the developers, manufacturers, formulators and distributors of plant science solutions for agriculture and pest management in the United States. CropLife America member companies produce, sell and distribute virtually all the crop protection and biotechnology products used by American farmers.Mission
CropLife America's mission is to foster the interests of the general public and CropLife America member companies by promoting innovation and the environmentally sound manufacture, distribution and use of crop protection and production technologies for safe, high-quality, affordable and abundant food, fiber and other crops.
Serving Farmers and Consumers
George Washington once said there is no more important service than to improve agriculture. For decades, CropLife America has been committed to this goal through science in agriculture. CropLife America member companies provide the plant science technologies that help farmers to control weeds, insects and diseases and economically and efficiently produce safe, abundant and affordable supplies of food and fiber. This technology also helps to maintain public health by controlling vermin and purifying water and by enhancing the beauty and usefulness of lawns and gardens. Our members' biotechnology innovations contribute to crop protection and soon will be adding crop output enhancements to the list of benefits, which consumers enjoy.
From our scientists and researchers to our product managers and marketing representatives - the men and women of the plant science industry are dedicated to finding cutting-edge solutions to age-old challenges.
Representing the Plant Science Industry
CropLife America represents the developers, manufacturers, formulators and distributors of plant science solutions for agriculture and pest management in the United States. CropLife America member companies produce, sell and distribute virtually all the crop protection and biotechnology products used by American farmers. Since 1933, CropLife America and its staff of communications, legal, legislative and scientific professionals have coordinated and led industry efforts to:
Increase public understanding of the value of crop production and pest management technology in providing safe and abundant food, fiber and other benefits for the people of the world;
Support responsible stewardship of products to promote the health and well-being of people and the environment; and
Promote increasingly responsible, science-driven legislation and regulation.
Providing Products that Help Farmers and Benefit Consumers
Crop production technology, which includes herbicides, insecticides, fungicides and biotechnology products, helps control the thousands of weed species, harmful insects and numerous plant diseases that afflict crops. Without these important technologies, U.S. food production would decline, many fruits and vegetables would be in short supply and prices would rise. What's more, America's production of important fibers for clothing, such as cotton, would decrease. Some of the many other benefits, which we take for granted, include:
Health: disinfectants used in hospitals, hotels, restaurants and homes to destroy bacteria, fungi and germs;
Household: products used to control termites, roaches, ants, rats and other pests;
Industry: products to control vegetation that clogs navigable and other waterways or threatens to obstruct highway, utility and railroad rights of way; and
Recreation: products used to protect and enhance lawns, gardens, public parks, playing fields, lakes and ponds.
Extensively Tested and Regulated
Herbicides, insecticides and fungicides are regulated by federal and state governments. Before farmers and other applicators can use them, these products undergo extensive research, development, testing, governmental review and approval to protect human health and the environment.
Products that protect America's food crops must pass up to 120 health, safety and environmental tests to ensure their safety and effectiveness before being granted registration.
Development and testing by industry and registration by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency takes eight to 10 years and costs manufacturers $100 million to $200 million for each crop production product.
On average, only one in 20,000 potential products successfully makes it through the regulatory process from the chemist's or biologist's discovery laboratory to the farmer's field.
Improving Safety on a Global Scale
Members of CropLife America are dedicated to safety, protecting the environment and serving people through science in agriculture. Annually, they spend hundreds of millions of dollars to:
Develop low dose, more targeted and environmentally friendly products, which break down rapidly after protecting food crops;
Research biotechnology innovations, including insect and herbicide resistant plants;
Improve product packaging and delivery systems to minimize both applicator exposure and environmental impact;
Establish statewide pesticide container collection programs and develop effective, environmentally safe uses for recycled pesticide containers; and
Educate and train pesticide users on ways to protect America's precious soil and water resources.

RISE (Responsible Industry for a Sound Environment)® Representing manufacturers, formulators, distributors and other members of the specialty pesticide and fertilizer industry, RISE unites and speaks for the industry on environmental and regulatory issues. Specialty pesticides are used in forestry, nursery and greenhouse operations, turf and ornamental applications, vegetation management and to control public health pests, such as mosquitoes, cockroaches and ticks. Specialty fertilizers improve the environment by promoting the health and vigorous growth of desirable plants. Association members believe it is important to highlight the specialty industry's contributions to the research and development of environmentally sound products and to show support for appropriate legislation, based on demonstrated need and good science.
RISE works closely with national, regional and local associations to help inform the public about the many benefits that result from proper use of specialty pesticides and fertilizer and the importance of these products in controlling disease-carrying insects and vermin, which threaten public health.
