9-11 Hearings would be impeachment hearings if a Dem had been in charge
- I believe Republicans would have been justified in holding impeachment hearings if a Dem president had been sitting in the oval office on 9-11 under the same circumstances.

- Even if one can't agree with the 'let it happen on purpose' theories...what happened before, during and after 9-11 can be justly labeled as gross incompetence and dereliction of duty at the very least.

- Can you imagine a Democratic White House getting away with any of this without at least a dozen hearings and charges of treason?

- So what's up with the Democrats? Why haven't they made 9-11 and the dozens of 'unanswered questions' an issue? Why do they seem so fearful of demanding the truth?

- I can understand why they can't call for impeachment while Republicans literally control the government. But this shouldn't preclude them from at least supporting the families of the victims and THEIR effort to get at the truth.

- Where are the investigations? The hearings? The outrage at the Bush* administration's obstruction of justice and whitewash of the 9-11 commission?

- A Democrat would have been impeached under these same circumstances. Yet Bush* is coming out smelling like the proverbial rose and will ride his 'heroism' back into the White House. What a shame for our country.

1. A LOT of people agree
In fact, I think this is one of the biggest things working in our favor that no one really talks about. The American people tend to be wary about having the entire government run by the same party. I've increasingly heard it said by Republicans that they fear too much corruption is taking place without any means to prevent it from happening, and many will either vote against Bush or against an incumbent legislator in order to change this.

2. Just look at Capitol Hill
Republican President, Republican House, Republican Senate, and a (usually) pro-Republican Supreme Court. Impeachment? For that to happen, you'll have to let the wheels turn just like they did in Watergate - a lot more people are deciding that, after two major intelligence failures (9/11 and Iraq's WMDs), they've had quite enough of George Walker Bush in the White House.

3. Yes if the GOP had enough folks on the Hill
I agree. They wanted someone to point a finger at. bush choce Saddam, but I think in the case of a Dem prez the GOP would have gone oafter the Oval Office first.

4. Tell me about it.
Lying about leaving the toliet seat up would have gotten a democratic president impeached!

5. Wouldn't even have to lie. Just the fact that the seat was up
would be enough for them.

6. It's too late

When they are raising the issue now, they will be denunciated as unpatriotic. Since 2 years now there are some very basic, irrevocable assumptions and taboos, underlying every media report and comment. These "truths" are now deeply rooted in the public mind. It is just completely unthinkable that the Administration might somehow be at least partially responsible for 9/11. Anybody who tries to suggest so could badly hurt himself.
At least such an attack on Bush, based e.g. on the incredible refusal to grant more time to the commission, should be well-thought and subtly prepared.

As the Democrats supported all the decisions regarding the Patriot Act and the war, they are a little bit to blame themselves for this climate, but the main problem is the media. The Democrats should have been more aggressive concerning the 9/11 truth resp. the coverups from the beginning.

edited for clarity.
