Going through my memory banks of war in the last century, starting with WWII, I discovered that candidates who promise to end wars are the ones elected to office.
Harry Truman's bombing of Hiroshima has been credited with ending WWII. As a Vice President, who finished a sitting President's office when he died, he was reelected to office some think on the strengths of ending WWII.
Eisenhower promised to end the Korean War, which Truman started, and was elected to office. He kept his promise although the war didn't really end, the action did and the troops came home.
Nixon ended the quagmire of Vietnam started by Johnson. Although again this was not a war we won, the action was ended.
Now we have Iraq, started partially I believe, to make Bush look like a wartime President and increase his electability. Too bad his advisors don't read history's lessons. I think the candidate to promise an end to this war and bring the troops home will win over Bush in a landslide.
However, if Rove wakes up to the inevitable, he may have Bush do this himself to make him look like he did the right thing and now he will be reinvented as a President who brought peace to a nation in wartime.
Although, I find it ludicrous that anyone would fall for this staged scenario right before elections, I can't believe he's gotten away with up till now anyway and this could happen.
