It was Greenwich High School students who organized a protest on Jan. 29 when President George W. Bush held a $2,000-plate fundraising dinner at the Greenwich Regency Hyatt. And it was Greenwich High School students who led many of the night's chants (a favorite being "Send Bush to Mars!"), smiling, shouting, waving signs, jumping up and down and sending a swell of confidence through the nearly 300 demonstrators in attendance.

In Greenwich, where Bush has family ties and enjoys broader Republican support among wealthy residents, SCPAD (Student Coalition for Peace and Democracy) stands in sharp contrast. These are students who in many cases are rejecting their parents' views and refusing to be defined by "rich kid" stereotypes. "Our group is especially large considering that Greenwich is a wealthy town," says Allen. "A lot of students are open-minded."

Asked where he goes for non-mainstream views of Bush administration policies, 16-year-old SCPAD organizer Igor Zhukovsky said, "I read a lot. I read The New York Times , I just read Al Franken's Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them and Michael Moore's Dude, Where's My Country? " While both he and Allen admit that many students are still apathetic, he says, "The goal of this club is to figure out what makes people uninterested
. I have people coming up to me in the hall who are ready to show their voices." Among the young people, he says, political awareness is growing. "Something is changing. The policies of the Bush administration are becoming apparent to everyone."

There IS hope among the so-called "apathetic" young. Don't let anybody tell you otherwise.
