Colin Powell on "sons of the powerful and well-placed"

I was reading Paul Waldman's "Fraud" this evening and came across an interesting quote from Colin Powell's book "My American Journey"...

"I am angry that so many of the sons of the powerful and well-placed and so many professional athletes (who were probably healthier than any of us) managed to wangle slots in Reserve and National Guard units. One of the many tragedies of Vietnam, this raw class discrimination strikes me as the most damaging to the ideal that all Americans are created equal and owe allegiance to their country."

Can you imagine James Earl Jones reading this excerpt over still images of Bush, interspersed with images of REAL U.S. soldiers, in a "MoveOn.org" ad?



Powell's quote is on page 30, which also contains Bush's response to "The National Guard Review" in October 2000 when asked what the National Guard taught him: "the responsibility to show up and do your job."

That would be a good ad...but take into consideration the use of the CCR song "Fortunate Son" with the line "...and when they play Hail to the Chief they point the cannon at you" to sell blue jeans? Do you believe that the message will actually sink in to a society moved mostly by Madison Avenue?

I was hoping Colin Powell was going to admit that his own son Michael Powell got a job as FCC Commissioner with free trips to Vegas from the companies he's supposed to be regulating due in part to having a powerful father.
