more republicans for ABB
I was talking to a woman in my office this morning, it came up that she was a Republican (where I live that's no surprise, everyone is a republican) I said: "You certainly aren't going to vote for Bush again are you?" She said: "Won't happen. I'm not sure if I'll vote for the Dem but I won't vote for Bush." I started in on the war and she said: "What really bugs me is the deficit. My husband and I are both freaked over it. Neither of us will be able to vote for him again."

Ha ha.

It really IS the economy, stupid.

The little "plan" of Reagan's cannot work. (Reagan said he went about the "revolution" all wrong. He tried to cut the budget first and then cut taxes. He said if he had it to do all over again he'd cut taxes so low it would require Congress to gut the budget. I heard during the 2000 election that was exactly what Bush (his handlers really) intended to do. So, they cut taxes to the quick but now no one wants to cut the budget. They are screwed.)

2. I am also hearing this same objection
Especially among seniors.

My good friend, who is a right-wink freakozoid, and I were having breakfast at a popular greasy-spoon restaurant in his far-flung Houston suburb a few weeks ago. A little couple overhearing our bickering (we argue nearly constantly about the state of the nation) piped up with, "We voted for Bush last time but not this time. This deficit is out of control."

My friend was shocked. Turns out the man was a retired colonel and not at all happy about the war, or what Bush has done to veterans' benefits, but it was the deficits he was most angered about. He made a point of saying virtually the same thing: "I may or may not vote for the Democrat, but I sure as hell ain't votin' for Bush." (This was before Iowa, so I have a suspicion that this gentleman would feel better about casting a vote for a decorated Viet Nam war veteran.)

And then another little old lady, walking past our table, stopped, and said basically the same thing.

This is in the suburbs of Houston Texas, people. From the mouths of sixty-something Caucasians. Comfortable retirees.

Deficits are the issue with these people. So talk about them.

4. I just called Feinstein's office
and complained (again) about her vote for the Medicare Drug Company Subsidy Bill. It's the one that makes it illegal for the government to get the lowest price for drugs.

I said that the people at the senior center are really upset about this bill.

5. emboldened by my co-workers response
our republican director was in my office as he was leaving just now. I walked him to the elevator (on my way for another diet coke) and said: "while we're on the subject (we were not on the subject) you're not voting for Bush again this time are you?" He said: "no way, not after what's been going on the last two weeks."

(I wanted to say "two weeks you idiot, where have you been for the last 3 years!" And I didn't get to ask what it was that pushed him over the edge, the deficit or no WMD. It will be difficult to bring up the subject again as I work for the government and we're not supposed to talk politics BUT I am gonna say to all of them when I can: "Let's make a deal, I'll vote for Olene for gov (our wonderful republican gov. who'll I'll vote for anyway) if you'll vote for the Dem for prez.")

12. Conservatives...they really care about the troops, eh? One of the bigger
conservative myths going. It's all about their pocketbooks, all the time.
