Had my taxes done today. I was
informed my taxes break even at state and federal levels.

I was also told I should receive $1,000 for each of my children, 'aside from an income cap?" Three kids, 3 grand. Oh, sorry, the income cap cuts that to 2 grand. So, in theory, I should be receiving $3,000+, but, in reality, I receive $1,800. That 1,800 barely touched on home schooling.

We had a SIX year old with a gun in school today in my neighborhood.

America is becoming a dream, a carcass upon which jackals dine.

2. You were so brave to do this!
I'm putting my taxes off till the last minute....I can't bear to see it...

Last year we told our accountant that we would happily pay higher taxes if we could have the human services in America better represented and programs installed to help all of society. I thought he was going to fall off his chair. I wonder if anyone ever told him that before? :)

3. bush is so jacking the middle and lower income brackets
It's not funny.

People bought this "tax breaks for everyone" bullshit, and what do we get? Tiny tax credits for most of us, and $90000+ tax cuts for the investing class.

What A Crock.

4. The one redeeming moment for me
was listening to this tax calculator railing on Bush. She and I got along, and, for the record, she was an elderly woman in Louisiana. She was PISSED.

5. other tax increases...
I noticed last year that I have to start reporting my prior years state tax refund as federal income. Huh?

Sounds like a tax increase to me.

6. You mean that when they return your money to you it is called income.
That sounds like double taxation to me. It was already income you earned and were taxed on. They taxed your income and then returned all they couldn't justify. It is already taxed income. I do not believe they can get away with taxing you twice on the same income.

And if you itemize for Fed and State, you can deduct State income and SDI taxes on your Federal return but then you have to add them back in when calcualting state deductions. State taxable income is higher than Fed because of this.

I'm bummed about my taxes because I went from being a single parent filing head of household to just being single when my grown daughter moved out. Effectively raised my taxes over $3000 just for the change of filing status.

I had my taxes done this week but I'm holding off until April to mail them because I have to come up with the over $800 I owe now.

8. California state income TAXES the previous yr's "refund"
Edited on Sat Feb-07-04 01:25 PM by SoCalDem
Say I withheld 1000 for state and I owe 700.. they send me back the extra they held for a year ..

the following year, I must add $300.00 as income..:wtf:..

If I calculate the withholding to the penny, I get that money in every check and it's not sent to the state.. I owe nothing, so they send me none of my already taxed money back..

the next year I have 0 to report as a refund.. no extra tax owed on 0..

can you spell....R I P O F F ???

9. Yeah, and how is it not "double-dipping?"
Fed income is lower than California's to begin with, and then it goes even higher when your overwithholding becomes taxable income.

Bastids.

11. It started last year didn't it?
I remember noticing when I did my 2002 return and was a bit miffed. Is that not the first year they did it?
