1. The San Jose Mercury News

(the main newspaper of Silicon Valley) had an interesting perspective on this today.

Largely unreported in the discussions on outsourcing is the fact that the US has a huge trade surplus on IT issues. Meaning, we do a lot more IT work for other countries than they do for us.

If we implemented a protectionist scheme requiring the work to be done here, the other countries could implement the same kind of scheme, thus disproportionately doing MORE harm to the US worker.

I still don't see any simple solutions to the problem. If a scrupulous company tried to keep all their work in the US, how can they compete the company down the road that's using cheaper IT workers abroad? Once we start down the protectionist road, other countries do the same, which hurts the US worse than it hurts other countries.

So my answer about what to do? Fuck if I know.

7. A lot of that work being done overseas is shoddy, cheap but shoddy

why is the work shoddy? Well the goals of projects are poorly defined and poor communication between the US office and the office in XYZ country. The company I work for did some outsourcing and the product that was created had to be pulled, it pissed off a bunch of our clients and it had to be redone here in the US.

A friend works for a machining company and they lost contracts for the US Navy to Asia...only to have the Navy ask them to rework the shoddy work on the parts (the parts weren't within tolerances)...yet the Navy guy told my friend it was still cheaper to have a US company fix what was wrong than have the US company make it...

Requiring American corporations to hire Americans is "protectionism"? Giving them tax breaks to send jobs overseas is a "Free Market"?

in wages in the U.S. It is countries with IT folks who are paid much less than in the U.S., such as India and China, where the problem is.

Get rid of the tax loopholes. Label all those companies unpatriotic and label all the CEO's as traitors and shout it LOAD from the mountain tops. Make a law that if a company moves its labor off-shore, then the CEO's AND their families have to leave also. CNN needs to publish the names of the CEO's and the directors so we can start to shun them. I also think we need to force Ashcrofts hand and start having huge protest rallies in the streets. We need a renewed labor movement with the same intensity as he one in Chicago during the 1870-80's.
