The U.S. government supposedly works for us, not the other way around. Although national security may be a good reason to keep some information classified, Bush and his administration have abused that notion to keep all kinds of information from us. So, turning a famous question on its head:
What don't the American people know, and why don't we know it?
I'll start.
1. We don't know what's in George Bush's Texas driving record before 1995 (issued a new license, old record scrubbed or trashed).
2. We don't know what George Bush was doing for at least a year of the time he was "serving" in the TANG (incomplete records, no witnesses, no tax records so far).
3. We don't know what drug problems Bush had before 1974 (indirectly suggested he had them by saying he was clean since then).
4. We don't know what's in the Reagan presidential papers (Bush executive order blocked release mandated by law).
5. We don't know who met with Cheney to forge a national energy policy (Cheney refused subpoena concerning this).
6. We don't know who sent anthrax to Democratic Congressional leaders (even though indications are that it came from an Army base, and even though it killed some postal workers).
7. We don't know who forged the Niger uranium documents that turned up in Italy in a timely manner when the Bush administration was making its case for war (see www.talkingpointsmemo.com).
8. We don't know who leaked Valerie Plame's name to Novak and other journalists (though we do know from Novak that it came from high in the Bush administration).
9. We don't know who's in Gitmo, what they're there for, when they'll be charged, what they'll be charged with, who's been released.
10. We don't know why planes weren't scrambled on 9/11 after word of the hijackings was out.
11. We don't know if Cheney's task force on terrorism (C. appointed as head in May '01) ever met, or what they talked about.
12. We don't know why Saudi royals (? - or was it bin Ladens, someone help me out here) were flown out of the country right after 9/11 while U.S. skies were closed to everyone else.
This is just a start. Feel free to add to/correct this list. I haven't even touched on WMD claims, Florida, who had the Patriot Act ready to trot out, many details of 9/11, the question of Bush's special treatment in the TANG, Harken. Etc.
I'm thinking that if we come up with a good and verified list, it would be a useful email during the campaign.
Anyone interested in this project? Feel free to commandeer it. I'm going offline now, but I'll check in later.
P.S. What we do know: Bush is incompetent.
