Ignoring this will not work now that the "angry left" won't let them get away with it. Actually, I had a premonition about this. He'll go on national television and admit that he defaulted on his military service, but that what he learned from <insert insincere excuse here> has made him able to lead <insert standard * cliche here>.

You see what I'm getting at here. Of course, it won't work with most of the country, especially heavily military states in the south and midwest. Anywhere in TX outside of Austin will definitely forgive him, but it will be moot.
