Possibly redundant question for DU veterans about military record-keeping

Am I wrong in thinking that the military, even at the National Guard level, is quite dependable when it comes to recording events on a base? For example, if a second lieutenant in the Air National Guard took to the sky in an aircraft, would the base not write down the time of the flight, the aircraft, the pilot, etc.? I think it has been already demonstrated from available records that the Texas and Alabama Air National Guard make a note of when a Guardsman, say, doesn't show up for a physical and has his ability to fly revoked. So if he did fly, would it also show up on a record? Does the military destroy records like that after a certain period?

Have you ever seen Lee Harvey Oswald's Marine sniper training records? I have seen them a few times. They're in a little record booklet that was written in during sniper exercises. Oswald was a very accurate shot by Marine standards. Look it up. It's there.

The reason I mention Oswald is that from what I can tell the military likes to keep record of exercises and base activities. So theoretically, if the President was at the military base during the time gap that is currently being debated, shouldn't that show up somewhere in the Alabama Air National Guard's records? Were he at the base, wouldn't it be highly likely that his activities would be noted?

Also, is the next move by the White House going to be a search for or invention of some kind of sanctioned leave given by Bush's commanders?

I am relatively young and know little about the military. As far as I can tell, the gap in the President's record, the overall lack of documentation, and his administrations own shifty handling of questions calls his service into question.

Any help would be nice.:)

2. The WH is directing reporters to the wrong place re records.

If they still exist, the real records (daily roll call records) will be filed in the actual NG unit offices where * supposedly served. Those records list WHO showed up, WHAT they were assigned to do that day, and HOW well they performed. If * didn't show up, or was disciplined, the facts would be written down in those records.

Remember, NG commanding officers are/were rated based partly on their record keeping.

5. The state National Guard Bureau is the place to look

A unit office isn't large enough to hold thirty-some years worth of attendance rosters. The state NGB will microfilm these records and store them permanently.

3. Duty officer reports

The duty officer reports outline all flights.

All that reported for duty

All that did not report for duty

most important is the Squadron's readiness report. This list all that reported that day and all that did not report that day. This is forwarded up the chain of comand by 8am every day

6. When I was a Naval Aircrewman, we had to keep a personal ....

flight log of every flight we made. Plus there was the flight schedule put out by Flight Operations listing the flight and crewmembers assigned. The Crew Chief had a flight manifest that all crewmembers had to sign once we were all on board and the door was closed. The pilots had to account for all persons on board to calculate things like total aircraft weight vs. fuel consumption, you would not want to run out of fuel over the ocean somewhere! Yes, there were tons of paperwork that was done to verify flight time logged. I qualified to fly on board two different types of aircraft over the coarse of my stay in the navy, the mighty P3C (update II) Orion during my sea duty rotation, and the UH1N Twin engine Huey while on shore duty so as to maintain my flight syllabus and status.

been in the military gets when they are discharged from active duty. Its in essence,the same thing as having a birth certificate. It lists all the training, promotions, time served, duty stations, awards, medals and type of discharge, Honorable, Dishonorable, Other than Honorable! It is very nessasary in order to get veterans preferance jobs with military contractors, Local, State or Federal Govt. and get VA Benifits (health, disability, education and death). It is so important in most peoples lives, that we treat them like gold!
