What happens when the draft is reinstated?
Say Bush wins this November, or he loses, but he "wins". Anyway, say he gets another term in office.

What happens once the draft is brought back in early 2005? Will there be a public outrage, or will the people just sort of go along with it? I'm worried that there won't be any backlash against this Administration once they begin conscripting young people (probably only men) into their army.

Also, will they draft women too? What kind of exemptions will they concoct to allow the children of privillege to weasel out?

2. It will be women too
Actually, I read somewhere that it's already set up for drafting certain individuals up to age 44 (??) in the medical field, doctors and nurses.

5. Did I miss something here...we still have the power of fillibuster
its not like you can just sneak a stealth draft by in an appropriations bill.

Of course asshole Frist does want to ammend the Senate rules.

12. Why would any comittee democrat allow that?
unlike healthcare, energy or transportation bills there is no way to make money or special interest gains off the issue. Only a true Neo-con would vote yes on a draft over choosing political expediency.

17. Let's just back up a bit...
... and verify. The last call for a universal draft came from none other than Charles Rangel of NY.

It was a mistake to suggest it then, and it's a mistake now. Providing human fodder for the empire machine is inherently wrong, no matter who makes the suggestion.

21. It should be noted that Rangel
proposed it as a form of opposition. He proposed it to make a point, knowing that it'd never pass.

25. Okay, when the sh*t hits the fan...
... about the draft, who gets blamed for it? Democrats--even though a draft ultimately supports the aims of the neo-conservatives. I tried to lay out the downside to this strategy here:

Cheers.

6. Good questions, BSG
I don't know the answers, but my guess is that when
the services are full of draftees, the incidence of
fragging goes way, way up.
As for women: given what's happening in Iraq with
servicewomen being assaulted and raped by their "fellow"
soldiers, a draft presents the possibility of young
women being drafted and then raped while in the service.

7. Does the draft have to be authorized by congress?
Or can it just be "activated" at any time by the commander-in-chief?

(God, it really, REALLY burns me to refer to preident-coked-up-frat-boy as the "commander-in-chief")

9. Congress must authorize it
BUT the president could declare a national emergency "Red Alert", which would likely give him the power to bring the draft back by fiat.

11. All previous drafts have been authorized by Congress
I guess it depends on whether we're living in a dictatorship or not.

16. They'd Probably have to LIHOP/MIHOP another Terraist Attack
then push it through while Congress was too afraid to refuse,
like they did with the Patriot Act.

It won't contain any limits on HOW MANY PEOPLE they draft.
At most, it will have upper and lower age limits.
They could draft everybody within the age range,
except for politicians and whoever else they deemed
essential.

How many troops would it take to implement PNAC's plans?

Children of privilege could "serve" in the Texas Air National Guard
like their pResident did.

15. Young people will wish they had bothered to vote.
And if they did bother, they'll curse their choice or curse the other side for not showing up.

Either way, it will be too late to wake up. The country will have been bought and sold wholesale if there's a second term of *.

18. It's a sad state that we will have to wait until after another
'selection', and then they will do something this horrible, but we can't talk about this horrible thing before the 'selection' occurs.

I know it's coming, we all know it's coming, the PNACers can't implement their imperial world conquering agenda without more warm bodies to bleed for the cause, and no more warm bodies are volunteering for a war-time force.

24. It will happen!
count on it! The DOD cannot indefinitely extend enlistments and delay retirements. As much as they would like to, there is an upper limit. Once that is reached, there is no choice but forced enlistments, i.e., the draft. It has started, but not close to ending.

27. If it happens, I become a minister in the Universal Life Church.
http://www.ulc.org/

Because, IIRC, "Ministers of religion" cannot be conscripted. They can be asked to volunteer as chaplains, but they are under no obligation to accept.

28. bet the find a way to exempt ULC from it
they will find a way to say "established" religions I'm sure. Otherwise everyone would become a ULC minister (hey, it took me 5 mins online) and they know it. I'm thinking that they will claim that it *isn't* a religion.

Don't underestimate 'em.
