Smokin Joe Conason NAILS the Right Wing. (A Must Read)
Edited on Fri Aug-01-03 08:00 AM by Armstead
Man oh man. If Joe Conason's book is anything like this interview, let's hope he has a good agent who gets him plastered all over the tube. A must-read interview.

Joe Conason Talks with BuzzFlash.com About His New Book, Republican Hypocrisy and the Sins of the Mainstream Media

A BUZZFLASH INTERVIEW

He’s a media hero all right. Joe Conason is co-author with Gene Lyons of the seminal book on the vast right wing conspiracy that attempted to undo democracy by trying to impeach Clinton. The book, of course, is "The Hunting of the President."

Joe, a columnist for Salon and the New York Observer (where he is also editor-at-large), is back with a new book called "Big Lies: The Right-Wing Propaganda Machine and How it Distorts the Truth." Unlike Ann Coulter’s books that belong in the fiction section, Joe "rips through the ten most damaging lies perpetrated by the right-wing propaganda machine."

2. You know what?
We know what they are all about...what they are capable of, how they continue to operate, but what damn difference does it make if they are given pass after pass, excused, and unchallenged? What damn difference does it make if every Democrat who backs down, who cowers, who apologizes, who is complicit, who undermines the opposition' credibility and intent is forgiven with tortured rational and gushing illusions about a brilliant and masterful plan?

Nothing will change if the Democrats elevate the status quo representitive of the established party who has lost their way. And the fault lies with those willing to accept complicity of the crime, by voting for those who are complicit as the alternative to the criminals.

No change on the horizon,

4. Afterthought
The only way to reverse the trend is from the bottom up. No appointment from the top down will shift the political and cultural landscape.

10. Then why do you waste so much time
complaining about those Dems "at the top"?

11. that was the point.
Happened to notice a comment you made in a thread, expressing hope that the Dems would go after Bush on the question of WMDs. And some did, they asked the tough questions until along came Clinton and took the air out of the balloon... I wondered if I should save that quote of yours to remind you of it at a later date.

6. I wonder if Howard Dean read this quote from Conason
"Unfortunately I don't think there’s much chance of that happy outcome until liberals learn to hit back hard. The classic American hero is the underdog who wins respect by fighting back against a bully. Sometimes the bully just limps away to nurse his wounds. Sometimes the bully wises up and mends his ways. Occasionally, the underdog and the bully become best friends. But the underdog who dares to fight back is always better off."

Dean's strategy is that plus inspiring hope in his followers that we can change America for the better.

9. No, but he gave Kerry a little promo
in defending Dems who were being targeted as un-patriotic even though they were veterans (and oft times their accusers were not). Too bad it doesn't go futher because that is still capitulation - accepting the Republicans criteria for the rules of the game. A measure of patriotism should not be measured in military service.

12. The reason I connect that quote with Dean is because
his whole campaign is the "Little Engine that Could" and he is demonstrating the fighting spirit of the underdog against the bully better than Kerry, who is the Dem favorite.

15. I'm kicking this back up so people can read that quote!
:kick: Again, and again, and again. Memorize it. I don't require that you tattoo it on any sensitive body parts, but there WILL be a test on this material later...

7. A great interview !

This was my favorite statement by Connason :

<snip>

All the goals that the founders had for the United States are not ideas that contemporary so-called conservatives are much interested in. I’ll tell you what they’re interested in: They’re interested in achieving their own power, in amassing their own wealth, in protecting themselves -- and their interests -- against the interests of the majority. Those are the goals of the leaders of the movement that now calls itself conservatism. And it has very little to do with American traditions and American ideals.

<snip>

In my opinion, this perfectly describes every conservative I have ever known. "I got mine, F**K YOU !"

In the immortal words of Pink Floyd:

Money, get away
Get a good job with more pay and your O.K.
Money it's a gas
Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash
New car, caviar, four star daydream,
Think I'll buy me a football team
Money get back
I'm all right Jack keep your hands off my stack.
Money it's a hit
Don't give me that do goody good bullshit
I'm in the hi-fidelity first class traveling set
And I think I need a Lear jet
Money it's a crime
Share it fairly but don't take a slice of my pie
Money so they say
Is the root of all evil today
But if you ask for a rise it's no surprise that they're
giving none away

To me, this sums up the conservative belief system in its entirity. Everything you need to know about them is contained herein !
