What, exactly, is wrong with gay marriage???
Since I live in the bay area, I know gay couples who have been together ten and in some instances up to twenty years in committed relationships. That is fine until one partner becomes sick or possibly dies. Then, if the family is against it they go after the money and leave the remaining partner without property rights, rights to visit their sick partner, rights of inheritance, and if they have children, custody. These are some of the most normal people I know! I think we have to not allow this to be an "OK" form of discrimination. I support gay marriage as I don't see the big deal, except that the RW wants a sexy wedge issue. They lose nothing and considering the straight world's marriage track record, what the heck are they protecting??

3. it's only a problem for homophobes and atavistic throwbacks
Really, it's only the business of the two people involved, but then there are a bunch of busy bodies who feel predisposed to tell other people how to live.

It's exactly the same mentality as the War on Drugs. They're attacking lifestyle choices that are relevant only to those involved, and making it the State's business, IMO.

4. Its not the actual marriage itself...

Its the fact that it legitimizes being gay.

Its no longer some strange thing that some people do way over there...it makes being gay normal.

Thats what they are fighting.

5. But I've never heard repugs or conservatives say
they are against marriage for liars, thieves, murderers, adulterers, or others who disobey the Bible. What is it about being gay that is so much worse than other things? Why do we make murdering normal by allowing murderers to get married?

6. That's probably true, but at some point
We have to break this last bastion of discrimination. It's not like we are talking about another species. We all know or most of us anyway, someone who is gay, and other than sexual preference they are you and me.

31. That's exactly right
If we're allowed to marry, then the fundies and conservatives have lost their last cultural enemy, and will have suffered such a huge ideological defeat that they'll never recover. They need something to hate, and we're it.

7. In order to hide their bigotry, AM Hate radio
is using the code word of "tradition" and that their is 7,000 years of it.

The tradition is that marriage is between 1 man and 1 women, etc......

We are in the age of polite bigotry.

10. Tradition includes alot of ugly practices we would rather forget
Uh, slavery. Bans on interracial marriage. Japanese internment. Gitmo. There are closeted gays throughout our power structure. CIA, NSA, Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Baseball. Football, Basketball, Soccer, NASCAR, CEO, CFO, etc etc etc. I think this issue needs to be brought to a head in this election year and put to rest.

11. slavery used to be a "tradition," too.
And in some places it still is, but for the most part, the world moved on.

It's time to move forward on this, too.

equal is equal or it's not.

23. Traditional marriage...
Traditionally has consisted of several things...

Polgamy
Child Brides
Kidnapping and raping your future wife
Women as property

of course, when you're a bigot, stupidity is it's own reward, i suppose.

have some kind of horror story about "the strate members' of the family, coming in and destoying an additional life. 'that movie ,"if these walls could Talk ", had a good vignette with V. Redgrave ,as an old lady, being evicted after the lover died. When Raymond Burr died, a distant niece tried to step in and screw his partner, luckily they were in Nor Cal and she was summarily dismissed by the lover who had things carefully planned when Raymond was alive.

I guess when one is not worried about getting elected they can say what they believe and not worry about the rabid right.

14. The Republicans have been planing this for months
It's a divisive issue that gives right wingers an enemy, someone else to fear & hate and they can portray it as northern liberals that harbor and nourish such blaspheme.

There's a huge constituency that out & out hates homosexuals even more than blacks; (nearly everyone who's ever been in the service, for some damned reason), and that gives the Republicans the ignorant hate monger vote, and I must say, they've done a damn good job of it so far.

17. I'd like to say something about the "in the service" comment
As I am a currently serving member of the service, please do not use a throw-away line like that. You would be surprised how many people within the service are starting to lose the bigotries and prejudices.

True, we few liberals are still somewhat in the minority, but in my 18+ years serving, I have noticed that many of the new faces coming in are not bringing along the standard RW hatred.

It is changing, slowly but surely.

PS: Mayor Newsom and San Francisco makes me proud to be a Californian!

15. I am so proud of Gavin Newsome
I hope he sticks to his guns! By the way, I took my son on a field trip to the symphony at Davies Hall ( across the street from City Hall) the first day after they began giving out marriage certificates to gay couples. The symphony was lovely and all of the kids were incredibly well behaved (as usual) even the seniors loved them! As we went back to our car parked in the Civic Center parking lot, we saw a ton of news vans and reporters doing "man on the street" interviews. Not one of them thought to interview the kids and what they thought! A slight shake of the head and look for the next big person. The kids totally knew why the vans were out there and they had no issue with it, although I must admit, they were more interested in their middle school world than what was going on at City Hall. I wish they would have asked me!

16. Gay Marriage is a DISTRACTION and a socially DIVISIVE ISSUE
There are many URGENT matters before the American people--not the least of which is getting the Oaf * of Office OUT! This issue has been brought forward at this time to achieve one aim: DIVIDE AND CONQUER. For what it is worth, I am gay. I say, lets get the NEOCONS BEHIND BARS where they belong, then maybe we can discuss social issues in away that will not do FURTHER HARM to our Republic.

20. as does the Roman Catholic Church, the essense of mainstream
and the Anglican Communion and the Jewish community and many others as well. Islam is down on it as well.

This is not a narrowly held Judeo-Christian thing as you suggest it is with your subject line.

I think its important to recognize this.

Sure looks "troubling", doesn't it? I mean to say the poor kids parents haven't been married so far, so why should he have to be troubled by this, his parents getting married, at such an early stage?

21. Well, it would stabilize relationships and diminish disease transmission
by lessening promiscuity. Wait a minute...
Mostly it has to do with chronic religious fears and misinterpretations and flat-out willfull ignorance.
Republicans don't like it because they would have to provide insurance based on family rates and all sorts of other marriage perks like inheritance rights, etc.

Republicans and their big business buddies don't want to provide health care and other benefits. I think everything they stand for can be traced back to money.

28. Last night on CNN (I think; I was channel flipping)
they did a short piece on the San Francisco story and they showed a picture of two middle-aged men who had just gotten married kissing on the courthouse steps. It was a long, passionate kiss. That makes a lot of people uncomfortable, and this discomfort makes them upset, so they want a law passed.

It made me uncomfortable, too, but I don't feel I have a right to enact my discomfort into law. I mean, the thought of my parents having sex makes me uncomfortable; that doesn't mean I think it should be illegal.

30. they use the slippery slope argument
They use the 'slippery slope' argument, like Rick (In)Santorum. First, you allow gay marriage, then you move on to polygamy and bestiality.

Of course, the Fright Wing always leaves out the fact that people are born gay. However, if I am not mistaken, bestiality is not something natural and is only the province of people that are insane?

33. There is absolutely nothing...
...wrong with gay marriage. It is bigotry and homophobia that have all the faults.

All they are protecting is their own selfish right to federally sanctioned discrimination of a minority group. They gotta have someone on the bottom of the shit pile, in order to get the heat away from themselves.
