Could be nothing, but embarrassing stories for Bush have a tendency to "disappear" these days:

A story on Larry Flynt's allegation that in the 70s George Bush paid for a girlfriend to have an abortion has suddenly come "down" from the Daily Telegraph web site. So far we've only been able to salvage the opening sentence:

"PRESIDENT Bush faced an extraordinary claim last night that he once paid for a girl-friend to have an abortion.

"The pro-life president arranged for the procedure in the early 1970s, according to porn publisher Larry Flynt."

PRESIDENT Bush faced an extraordinary claim last night that he once paid for a girlfriend's abortion.

The latest smear in an increasingly dirty election campaign follows a two-pronged attack on his likely election opponent, Senator Kerry.
While Mr Bush and Senator Kerry have so far steered clear of personal attacks, their unofficial supporters are stooping deep into the gutter.

Senator Kerry has already successfully shrugged off rumours about infidelity.

He has also been besmirched by photos falsely linking him with anti-Vietnam War activist Jane Fonda.

Now paralysed porn king Larry Flynt is preparing to publish equally dubious claims that the pro-life Mr Bush once made a girlfriend have an abortion.

The abortion rumour started last week when rap star Moby, who dislikes Mr Bush, suggested that Democrats attack Mr Bush in his conservative constituencies.

"For example, you can go on all the pro-life (internet) chat rooms and say you're an outraged Right-wing voter and that you know that George Bush drove an ex-girlfriend to an abortion clinic and paid for her to get an abortion," he said.

Now Flynt, whose last political foray was a hamfisted run for Californian governor, plans to publish the abortion as fact in an upcoming book.

"I got the story nailed," he said. "I've talked to the woman's friends, I've tracked down the doctor who did the abortion, I tracked down the Bush people who arranged for the abortion."

The trouble for Senator Kerry is the Republicans, who have their backs to the wall at the moment, seize on such material as sanctioned mud-slinging by the Kerry camp.

"It's only February, and they have made clear they intend to run the dirtiest campaign in modern presidential politics," declared Republican National Committee chairman Ed Gillespie last week.

Not surprising. The Telegraph is another piece of conservative propoganda.

Perle sits on their Board of Directors, they spend most of their time with their collective editorial tongues up Michael Howard's ass (or whoever is running the Tory party that month) and shouting from their gated estate rooftops about how evil Tony Blair and the rest of the Labour Party folk are for believing as they believe.

I've heard this before, that W got a girlfriend an abortion, but I can't remember when or where. It may have surfaced briefly in 2000. Was it maybe mentioned in that book about W's alleged coke use?

If it were true, and credible evidence could be presented, it would blow W apart. I think Moby's right, he has to be attacked in his base.

These anti-abortion people are huge hypocrites.

Many of them have had abortions in the past.

One lady who was speaking about against the "Hollywood elites" who were speaking out against the war last year was saying that they are using the war to push their "pro-abortion" agenda. She then added that she felt abortion should always be illegal and never be an option.
And then, my favorite part... she mentioned that she had had not one, not two, but three abortions in her life!!!!!!!!!!!!

a person who used to drink irresponsibly, or abuse drugs, but has reformed -- if such a person tries to prevent others from making the same mistakes, is that hypocrisy?

Couldn't a woman have an abortion and then come to believe that abortion is wrong, without being at all hypocritical?

That's not hypocritical. If it's true, Bush could be very open about it and say, "I was wrong. I've reformed." More likely, given his past history, he'll cover it up and get the stories pulled from web sites. The story then is the methods they go through to silence embarassing stories.

It is hypocrisy in my book. Especially when they try to shove their guilt onto other women who are getting abortions. Just because they were traumatized by their own actions does not make them right.

The pro-life president arranged for the procedure in the early 1970s, according to porn publisher Larry Flynt.

The controversial publisher of Hustler magazine told the New York Daily News he will make the claims in a book coming out this summer.

'This story has got to come out,' said 61-year-old Flynt. 'There's a lot of hypocrisy in the White House about this whole abortion issue. I've talked to the woman's friends.

'I've tracked down the doctor who did the abortion, I tracked down the Bush people who arranged for the abortion I got the story nailed.'

But Flynt would not disclose if he plans to name the woman.

The allegation comes after pop star Moby raised Republican hackles last week when he told a New York gossip columnist that he thought Bush's enemies should cause some political mischief. He said: 'For example, you can go on all the pro-life chatrooms and say you're an outraged right-wing voter and that you know that George Bush drove an ex-girlfriend to an abortion clinic and paid for her to get an abortion.'

There was no hint that 38-year-old Moby believed his abortion suggestion.

The White House had no immediate comment on the claim.

Republican National Committee spokesman Yier Shi said: 'The Democrats will do anything in this election, judging by their campaign tactics, to smear without any evidence or background. This is just another one of those cases.'

The abortion claim is the first hint of serious scandal that has emerged to harm the president's re-election chances.

Having won his party's support and the endorsement of family and conservative groups with his strong pro-life stance, it is certain to come under close scrutiny as the election in November draws closer.

It doesn't matter if Flynt's story is true or not - that remains to be determined. The fact that it was removed is the lie.

Also interesting to note, the media organization that owns the Telegraph has strong right wing ties: Richard N. Perle is a member of the Executive Committee, and Director and Co-Chairman of Hollinger Digital Inc. and Henry A. Kissinger is a member of the board of directors.
