Protect the Sanctity of Marriage!
<The sermon you'll NEVER hear>

Yes, my friends, I implore you, let's work together to protect the sanctity of marriage - that God-given, God-blessed institution that was given to us by the Heavenly Father to ensure the continuation of the human race.

Ah, marriage, the union of two souls in never-ending matrimony. What could inspire us more than "til death do us part" - that unbreakable vow which symbolizes the entwining of two lives?

Yes, friends, to protect marriage, we must not allow the sacred vows to be broken!

WE MUST OUTLAW DIVORCE IMMEDIATELY.

<You would think that if the RW straights really wanted to protect the "sanctity of marriage," they would work on the mess they've already made of it. After all, when you get down to it, the true sanctity of marriage is the vow itself, and no one seems to be concerned that half of all divorces - Christian and otherwise - end with the breaking of this solemn vow.

So, I would think that if you REALLY wanted to protect the sanctity of marriage, you would prevent people from breaking the vow. But, I guess its just easier to blame gays.>

3. I think it was Safire who...
wrote an article challenging those who talk about the sanctity of "traditional" marriage should put it into proper competition with everything else.

With divorce hanging around 50%, or higher, and the number of really bad and abusive marriages around, single parenting, cohabitation, communalism, etc, have proven themselves to be viable options.

Safire's point was that if marriage is so hot, why isn't it working better? Why not work to make marriage more attractive, and competitive?

4. Also...
we must make sure we wed our children off to a prominent family with a hefty dowry. Now THAT'S sacred and tradional marriage.

9. How is "the sanctity of marriage" threatened by gays getting married?
Are gays preventing non-gays from getting married? :eyes:

With tongue in cheek I agree that outlawing divorce would preserve the sanctity of marriage.

10. A question I've often considered.
And have yet to come up with a rational answer. Anyone?

11. Don't say things like that
Even in jest. It used to be very difficult to get a divorce. These people would go ahead and make it illegal again just to try and prove their holiness. With the condition of our country today, it would take about a year to convince the freepers it was a good idea.

12. No Chance.
They fall into the same category with the rest of the 50% divorced. This is a refuge for them, as much as it is for everyone who needs one. There's no way they'd even suggest the idea of outlawing divorce. Hence the true irony of my idea.
