How come the Dems don't give up Davis?
As a californian, I've got to say that he doesn't seem to be doing a very good job. Even people that are liberal here don't like the fact that taxes are going to go up and services, particularly public safety are going down. And the raising the car taxes was a really bad move. That is really going to turn alot of the less advantaged against him I think. There is a strong possibility that he will actually lose. Shouldn't there be some Democrats on the ballot too just in case? Maybe Willie Brown, or Barbra Boxer, or maybe Norm Mineta. Norm does have an airport named after him.

4. So was Nixon
If he could be recalled, and indeed there had been a recall election in 1974, would you have voted against the recall because "he was elected"?

9. Why are you comparing a President who committed a crime
with a governor who people just don't like who has not been proven to have committed any crime?

19. The crime doesn't matter
What matters is that the people have become disillusioned with the guy.

2. Yep. There has GOT to be at least one Dem on the ballot
Sounds like Larry FLynt is going to run. And that will perfectly symbolize what an obscene and pornographic thing this is for the Repugs to do, wouldn't it?

I don't know why the Dems didn't do something quite a bit more aggressive about this as it was unfolding. They should've been EXPLAINING to the state again and again and again that it was the Repug robber barons of the 21st Century who helped lay CA's financial woes -- Enron and company. And Bush's recession hasn't helped at all, nor his unmitigated fiscal irresponsibility.

But I can guarantee you one thing: if the Repugs win this recall election, the Dems will LOSE the 2004 CA delegates (unless we get the voting machine issues fixed and maybe even then).

3. It's too soon to give up
He's got an uphill battle, but he can win.

Novertheless, it is foolish to not put an electable Democrat on the ballot (Flynt is not to be taken seriously). The Dems need an highly visable candidate in the replacement field, then that candidate could appeal for support while still giving reasons why the recall should be rejected.

5. Why Blame Davis?
It's not as if he's screwed up the state in many different ways. For one thing, there's that whole deregulation/energy gouging crisis that he didn't seem to be be involved with; and then there's the fact that the the overall economy of the country went down, bringing California's economy down with it. And did you know that only 20% of California's budget is subject to discretion? If 80% of the budget is locked in in various ways, how is he responsible? He's tried to solve the problem in different ways, like raising taxes, but the 2/3 majority needed screwed him over.

8. Davis isn't the point.
The point is that the Pugs are trying to overturn a legitimate election, and they shouldn't be allowed to get away with it.

10. Yes but there is a bigger point here
Dick Riodan will win in October. He comes across as acceptable.. and I do not think the base is particularly enthusiastic about Davis. I don't think Gray can win the recall with Riordan on the other ballot.

We have to put a Dem on the ballot... Loyalty aside... this is about who controls the state in the next presientiial election cycle.

Feinstein has to run!!!

I wonder if Feinstein runs who takes over her Seante Seat.

11. The base had better get enthusiastic about Davis.
People who see the recall for the attempted coup that it is will vote for a Dem, but if there are two Dems on the ticket, the Pubs will win.

12. davis has to get more than50%
it is conceivable that the pukes win with a lower percentage. It is probable and that sucks. Anyone ready to recall the winner?

17. Just what is your "Bigger Point"
Edited on Sat Aug-02-03 01:03 PM by Bandit
What could possible be a bigger point than the overthrowing of democracy?? When a person is legally elected and has done nothing wrong except make people unhappy they should finish out their term. That is called Democracy. What is happening here is attempted coup.

.Di Fi doesn't want the job.Willie has more negatives than Davis. We need boxer right where she is. and Panetta , might as well have a puke.there comes a time when you must stand and fight, not cut and run, (even if it soils your pink tutu).

16. Californians are different
Edited on Sat Aug-02-03 01:07 PM by Snellius
Sometimes. At least when it comes to politics, Californians are inherently apolitical. Washington is some never never land thousands of miles back there somewhere. With Mexico to the south, nothing but forests above, limitless deserts on one side and a boundless ocean on the other, California is not really part of any country. It's where people go to get away from America. So when it comes to politics, Californians go to the polls much as they go to the track or roll the dice in Reno. Once, years ago, there was a ballot initiative, sponsored by the movie theaters, to ban "pay tv". It won easily. Until the California Supreme Court obviously declared it unconstitutional. After all, this is the state that replaced Ronald RayGun with Moonbeam Brown without thinking twice. This is state that tried to ban floridation of drinking water as a communist plot and fought pitched battles in the street over a vacant lot of weeds they called People's Park.

The current antipathy to Davis has become a kind of mass hysterical fad that has little to do with Davis himself, who is not much better or worse than most other governors. They owe their problems more to Dick Cheney than Gray Davis. But Republicans may be misreading the trend here. Californians don't dislike their governor because he's too far left but because he's too much like the stupid white money men in Washington, D.C.

Republicans want the Democrats to abandon Davis. I wonder why that is?
