Who knows about Cumulus Media?
For my 100th post, I'm asking y'all about Cumulus Media. We all hear about Clear Channel but I know nothing about Cumulus Media. They just bought the seven biggest radio stations in the central Missouri area, where I live. The article in this morning's newspaper says they paid $38.7 million and they are the second biggest radio conglomerate. If they're that big, I'm sure they must be right-wing too. I was just about to write a letter to one of the main local right-wing AM stations pointing out to them that they are missing out on a TOTALLY unserved one-half share of the listening audience, that I am among that audience and that consequently, I NEVER listen to their radio station -- or any other local radio station, for that matter. I bought a Sirius satellite system so that I can listen to radio that truly SERVES me, which Hannity and Limbaugh et. al. definitely do NOT. And then, I was going to ask them to start carrying Thom Hartmann's show. And I was going to point out to them that they would not have to compete with ANYBODY for that portion of the market, because NOBODY else is going after them.

But now, I suspect that it would be pointless for me to write them this letter.

Ron

2. Right wing as hell, they are
Cumulus owns seven stations in Fayetteville. A few of their atrocities...

* Right after the Newdow decision, they ran this little spot "decades of classroom tradition may come to an end because of two little words" with children reciting the Pledge of Allegiance (Knights of Columbus version) in the background.

* Between the start of the war and the flightsuit thing, they loved to play a bleeped version of John Valby's "Saddam." Don't click here if you have virgin ears.

3. I do I do!
I brought this company up the other day. Everybody thinks it was Clear Channel that instituted the company-wide ban on the Dixie Chicks after the Bush thing, but it wasn't, it was Cumulus. Some Clear Channel stations made that decision independently, but it was an actual policy handed down from a vice president at Cumulus.

Cumulus was, last I knew, third largest in the nation behind CC and Infinity. They concentrate on second and third-tier markets where they feel they get less competition for advertising from television and a big city newspaper. They're headquarterd here in Atlanta and are owned by the Dickey brothers. They also have an independent concerns called Dickey Broadcasting and Dickey Publishing.

I was on their Atlanta station (the only big market one) awhile back.
