Looks like "Slate" has come out on the Dark Side
Edited on Thu Mar-04-04 11:33 AM by AlabamaYankee
Slate, the MSN online magazine, seems to have come out on the dark side, with a snarky article pushing the Republican campaign meme of Kerry as a flip-flopper. I know Kaus has been on Kerry's case for a while, but this is pretty blatant.

Forgot the link. Here it is: http://slate.msn.com/?

1. A Kaus article?
Ignore it. Has nothing to do with Slate's editorial bent. He's one of those Democrats who has a compulsory need to embellish his cred as an "independent thinker" by writing only snark about his chosen party. Drop him a note thanking him for his support and vote for Gov Musclehead.

2. I'm not sure.
I follow Slate fairly closely and I think this is within their "snarky" margin of error. Granted Kaus is a jerk (while still calling himself a Democrat) and granted that they've been giving his stuff lots of "front page" coverage. But Kinsley, the editor, has been anti-Bush from day one. William Saletan I'm not sure about.

Most of them aren't real "dark siders" so much as that they simply can't think straight about Iraq and the Middle East. It's unfortunately a common problem amongst certain liberal intellectuals.

6. Kinsley's been out of the editor's seat
for at least a year, maybe more, since he was diagnosed with Parkinson's. Jacob Weisberg is the current editor.

3. The Slate URL says it all...
MS (Microsoft).

MS (Microsoft) + NBC (General Electric)

Who did you think they'd be backing?

4. Defend His Flip-Flops...
...instead of criticizing a writer. If you could do it, it might just convince some people like me to throw some more support Kerry's way. I'm open-minded.

7. Compare to Bush's flip flops
Which bothers you more?

No nation building turns to nation buidling.

Humble foreign policy turns to international bully.

Don't touch SS turns to We need to reduce bennies.

Support our vets turns to benefit and pay cutbacks.

Clear Skies turns to smoggy horizons.

Need I go on? OTOH, what has Kerry done that bothers you so? Did he lie to you as Bush did? Why does a liar deserve your support, that is the real question.

8. Did you even LOOK at my avatar?
I do NOT support Bush. That is almost an insult to me!

I WOULD like to discuss Kerry's record. He will be pressed on this to no end by the Bushies and I would like to hear his defense so I will know how to answer it too. If you don't want this on record, send me a PM.

9. I don't think the sentence was meant to insult
It was meant to challenge you. Kerry is unproven as a president, yes; however, Bush has had 4 years and has blown every chance he had at being a good leader.

I am not a Kerry first person, but when I look at what bush did, I have to stand by the motto Anything but bad economy, unnecessary war, constitutional discrimination, silly space odyssey, and government corruption (not necessarily in that order)

10. I mean to challenge misconceptions...
...about Kerry- if they are misconceptions. I believe that some people jumped in to support him too early and really didn't take into account the multitude of attack angles he gives to Rove. Kerry supporters need to know how to defend him. If he becomes the nominee, all Democrats need to learn.

14. Kerry supporters need to know how to defend him
I thought we were all Kerry supporters (ABB)!

No matter who the candidate was (except for Lieberman) Rove would have attacked the same way....LIBERAL AND FLIP FLOPS. That has been the repubs attack line ever since the 1980s. It did not work against Clinton and Gore.....both won the election.

16. It was not an insult...it was rhetorical.
Why does Bush deserve your support? I didn't say he already had it. And quite frankly, I find it an effective argument in many, but not all, circumstances.

Ask your inquisitor why Bush deserves their support, even if they think Kerry flip-flopped on some issues. Bush's flips flops have lead to the deaths of tens of thousands of people, and 550 of our own soldiers. What is the worst thing a Kerry flip flop has done? And why does't Kerry, a decorated veteran with real military experience, deserve a chance to set the country back on the right track. Anyone who argues with you that the country IS on the right track is probably already too far up Bush pooper to waste your time on.

11. which....
flip flops (if you can call it that) bothers you so much. Maybe if you tell me we can defend it.

For example, Kerry voted for the Patriot Act. He is still for the Patriot Act but not in the way it is being enforced by Ashcroft. Also, with regards to Leave no Child Left Behind, Kerry voted for this also. But now he does not support it because it is not being funded (tax cuts for the wealthy). How can you expect Kerry to support a program that is now not being funded. Kennedy was for the program at one time as well.

. . . but of course we don't want to talk about that. Unity! Unite, not divide. If you're not with us, you're against us. Etc. :eyes:
