Who is Ron Paul (R-TX)
I just turned on C-SPAN and saw him calling for reform of drug laws--which he says are filling the prisons with non-violent drug users, treats addicts like criminals while treating alcoholism as a disease, etc. From the little I caught, sounds like a pretty libertarian view.

Anybody have any more information on him? I liked what he said (crossing herself to avoid being possessed by Republican demons).

1. Libertarian - occasionally makes sense...
...but also has a lot of views you would NOT agree with.

6. Libertarians aren't evil
They might not agree with our philosophy, but they're not hypocrites like Republicans are. Of course, they don't have big-party status, so keeping clean is a lot easier.

2. he ran for Prez as a Libertarian way back
and he got my vote at that time :)

he's one of the old-school, who comes by his conservatim rationaly, as an end, not as a means to achieve power.

We could use more like him on that side of the ailse

7. Okay. I made a bad joke....
I actually think his views on reforming drug laws are worth looking at. I just have a thing about Republicans from Texas. And Ru Paul is certainly taller, and probably smarter.

There I go again...

4. Ron Paul has an R after his name
but he is really a Libertarian. He has a lot of good views on issues and I respect his independence and honesty. Libertarians though believe in small, non activist government, low taxes and no/limited social programs.

8. Thanks
I looked up some stuff on the web. Yep, true right-libertarian. Keeps calling the GOP the party of big government. He doesn't seem to be too keen on the neo-cons either. He seems to have a pretty inconsistent (non-libertarian) view re: abortion--he's against it.

I took the test on politicalcompass.org and came out as a Left-Libertarian, so I guess there is some stuff, i.e., personal liberty, that we would agree on and a lot that we would disagree about.

11. Neo – CONNED ! - speech by Ron Paul (R-TX)
...
The money and views of Rupert Murdoch also played a key role in promoting the neocon views, as well as rallying support by the general population, through his News Corporation, which owns Fox News Network, the New York Post, and Weekly Standard. This powerful and influential media empire did more to galvanize public support for the Iraqi invasion than one might imagine. This facilitated the Rumsfeld/Cheney policy as their plans to attack Iraq came to fruition. It would have been difficult for the neocons to usurp foreign policy from the restraints of Colin Powell’s State Department without the successful agitation of the Rupert Murdoch empire. Max Boot was satisfied, as he explained: “Neoconservatives believe in using American might to promote American ideals abroad.” This attitude is a far cry from the advice of the Founders, who advocated no entangling alliances and neutrality as the proper goal of American foreign policy.

16. Paul is the ULTIMATE anti-neocon
He is a major nemesis of Bush and the GOP establishment...supports gay marriage, abortion rights, ending prison sentences for nonviolent offenders, etc etc

The neocons absolutely LOATHE him for his articulate arguments against the war.

17. There are only two Repubilicans that I respect in America:
Edited on Thu Mar-04-04 02:24 PM by PROGRESSIVE1
Ron Paul(Texas) and Jim Leach(Iowa).

I do not always agree with Mr. Paul but one must respect is
principled stands.

He stands with we Liberal Democrats on the following issues:
-Drug Law Reform
-Anti-Iraq War
-Pro Balanced Budget
-Government has no place in personal lives

He rarely supports the establishment. Rarely voted with Clinton and
rarely votes with Bush*.

He also opposed amending the Constitution. He, like Robert Byrd, is a strong defended of the Constitution and sees no need to make so many changes to it such as the FMA and Presidential amendment.
