When can we expect Kerry to post his short list for VP?
I can't remember when Gore announced his short list, but I heard both Kerry and Edwards were on it before he chose Lieberman. How narrow did the field get: ten or fifteen possibilities? Who do you think might be on Kerry's list?

1. Never
I don't think ANY candidate publicly announces the list. Some of the names get leaked, or decent reporters discover that the candidate has met with someone.

It would be incredibly disrespectful to the people NOT chosen to announce that they were considered.

6. Thanks Dookus
I keep hearing about this "short list" on the news and keep thinking, "Now how come I never heard what Gore's list was before he chose Lieberman?" Now I know and I understand why its not announced publicly.

4. Don't expect whomever is on it...
...to ever be revealed, unless they choose to reveal themselves.

IT would be incredibly rude to do so.

5. I can tell you, from campaign sources...
...who is definitely, and who is definitely NOT, on the pre-list list:

ON

Richardson
Vilsack
Clark
Graham
Gephardt

NOT

Bayh
Dean
Edwards
Biden
Lieberman

7. interesting though not surprising
He isn't going to strip another sitting Senator (x Bayh, Biden, Lieberman). Frankly Dean doesn't seem a fit and I feel that Edwards really doesn't bring much to the game.

I don't know much about Vilsack. Any opinions? I'd take Gephardt over Graham or Richardson. Naturally, Wes is Best! :-)

18. Edwards brought him an additional 8 points in the polls last week
Edited on Thu Mar-04-04 11:45 PM by Woodstock
"Both Kerry and Edwards are basically tied with Bush in head-to-head matchups in a CBS News poll released this weekend. But when Kerry-Edwards are matched against Republican Bush-Cheney, the Democrats lead 50 percent to 42 percent."

http://www.salon.com/news/wire/2004/02/29/kerry_edwards/index.html

I hope the supposed insider is wrong, and Edwards is on that list.

8. Thank GOD Joe is on the "not" list
Man, what a disaster that would be! I was hoping to see Harkin on the "on" list -- he and Graham are my favorites for the post.

10. Harkin hurt himself with...
...his endorsement of Dean. Sad, but true. Now there is the image of the scream speech, with Harkin behind Dean, with that WTF look on his face.

Also, a sitting Senator will not be chosen.

Graham was a Governor, so he can be included in the "ON" list, even though he is a Senator (who is not seeking re-election).

I don't know much about Vilsack, except he is on the "ON" list. I forgot to ask 'why?'.

Gephardt is on the list because of his power with labor, but it is doubtful he would make the cut because he has no executive experience.
No doubt he will be offered Secy of Labor, though. He will be in the cabinet, I am certain (by the way, I saw him in Dayton Saturday stumping for Kerry at a union hall...he was terrific!)

Joe, thank God, will just be a Senator for the rest of his life.

Edwards is definitely 'off'--and even MSNBC reported it last night on Olberman's show.

Dean...well, we know the reasons !

11. I said the same thing earlier
regarding Harkin on the GD-2004 board. But I've been surprised recently with the general interest in him. The argument was made that Harkin would help heal the rift between Dean and Kerry that was evident during the primaries, and bring in the Dean supporters. Harkin has a great record, is an impassioned speaker and a real fighter, and he comes from a state that could be in play.

16. He is also...
...a current sitting Senator, and the Kerry campaign will not seat another Senator. Besides, Harkin was not well known outside of Iowa until he endorsed Dean, and the I Have A Scream speech was the most publicized introduction most had of Harkin. It is wishful thinking that he would be of any help at all. Additonally, he is almost as liberal as Kerry. A moderate would be much better on balance.

I don't think it would accomplish healing the rift between Deanies and the Kerry people (and other democrats for that matter). They would be pissed off no matter who won the nomination, no matter who was VP (unless it was Dean, which will never ever happen).

Most of we Clarkistas would have supported vigorously any candidate OTHER than Dean or Edwards or Lieberman. You bring in Harkin, you piss off the Gephardt Union folks, the Clark supporters--and unions are one group you don't want to piss off! :-|

Harkin really hurt himself badly with the 'convenient' and 'opportunistic' endorsement--especially when he dissed Gephardt (who is absolutely the NICEST person who ran).

12. From That List
From that list I'd have to say Clark then Richardson.

Bush has shown today that it will all be about the war. Kerry has good credentials, both as a warrier and and a young man of peace, but noone, and I mean absolutly noone on earth, can deny Clark's credentials in that area.

I like Richarson a lot though, liked him as Secretary of Energy, like him now that he's back home.

17. I agree!
Bush/Cheney campaign on images of September 11, 2001, and the "War", you can count on the VP being a super-loaded Heavy Metal Ticket.

Here is a campaign slogan:

Two Bars & Four Stars

vs.

What are the three "r's"?

23. shame I would like Edwards
but maybe he will be the attorney general who is not John Ashcroft. Of the 5 you have on the ON list, I would like Gephardt most, labor is key to me, and Gephardt is widely respected, and I think he could help us win Ohio and many rust belt states.

14. If the election were to be held next month.
I would say the Kerry would have to go with Clark. At this point in time IMO that would be the winning ticket. Alot is going to depend on how all the independent investigations go down. You also have to factor in the SC ruling due this summer on Cheney's energy papers. By mid summer it may not matter who Kerry's running mate would be.

15. Bill Richardson for VP
Here's a good analysis of Bill Richardson's potential as vice-president:

http://www.insightmag.com/news/2004/02/17/Politics/Analysis.Is.Bill.Richardson.A.Good.Fit.For.John.Kerry-600328.shtml

Here's a comparison of how electoral votes have changed from the 2000 election to the 2004 election. Many northern states that the Dems won in 2000 have lost electoral votes. Florida has gained 2 electoral votes.

19. Here we go again, again: Bill Richardson will not be John Kerry's VP.
Bill Richardson has said--has promised, time and time and time again, that he will serve out his full term as our governor. He has two years to go. To betray that promise would be political suicide.

Wesley Clark will be Kerry's VP. You can bank on that.

There will be rumors and leaks up until the very last moment, and then we'll wake up one morning with a surprise vice presidential nominee.
