Georgia Tries to Prevent Divorce
Last I heard the Georgia legislature was considering increasing the waiting peroid for getting a divorce from 30 days to 120 for couples without children and 180 for couple with children. What gets me is that this is from the same people who would like to reduce the waiting period for getting a gun and think the government should be out of the lives of its citizens. I just think this marriage law is stupid, espically since they want less regulations on gun control. Guns can kill most divorces do not kill.

3. Sounds like we need a Constitutional Amendment!
Edited on Fri Mar-05-04 11:39 AM by FoeOfBush
It will combine both of the things you list;

Since marriage is "til death do us part", the granting of a divorce will end with a duel. If neither spouse dies, the marriage is in full force and effect, if either spouse dies, then the divorce is granted to the surviving spouse. Amen.

Clause on Edit: You must wait 120 days after filing for the divorce for the duel, but you can pick up your weapon the weekend before at any gun show.

4. It should be extremely hard for anyone to get married
and extremely easy to get divorced instead of the other way around.

5. Frankly my dear, I don't give a shit.
All of these abstinance, Gay Marriage, divorce, sex ed, evolution, Family Values bullshit arguments don't mean two shits in Hell.

They are merely a distraction to let the Aristocracy keep on going to the bank with the Capital that represents YOUR labor, and YOUR intellectual work, and YOUR taxes and putting that capital in THEIR ACCOUNTS.

Anything other than that is, quite frankly, bullshit and delusion.

10. Worst thing is, it's working.
It's always worked. Gaius Julius Caesar didn't INVENT "Divide and Conquer," he just articulated and wrote it down well.

6. so, what's wrong with this, exactly?
There is nothing in Georgia state law requiring people to get married, right? So they are entering into a legal contract, if they know in advance that there is a 180 day notice requirement for termination of that contract, then they are allowing Georgia into their private lives. If they didn't want the state involved, they could have simply lived together, or had a religious ceremony with the civil license.

I have no problem with a 180 day waiting period, marriage is a lifetime contract, if you can't wait 180 days to get out of a lifetime contract, you shouldn't have entered it in the first place.

Now obviously, in cases of abuse, there needs to be a protection system for abused spouses and children, those are called retraining orders which are just as effective (or not) on spouses as ex-spouses.

9. You're correct, too. The legislation would slow down

people who are serial marriers, divorcing one spouse and immediately wedding another.

7. So, a husband can get that gun in plenty of time to stop his divorce?

11. Or the wife can get her gun and stop the divorce.

Women have the right to bear arms, too, you know.

12. See, that whole argument that divorce is a greater threat
to marriage than gay marriage is totally derailed the argument that gay marriage is a threat to the 'Merican family. They are trying to remove that from the table as an argument. Unfortunately, those zealots haven't figured out that social change happens over longer periods of time than half an election cycle.

13. Poor comparison
When you get legally married, you've invited the goverment to have an interest in your life, or at least acknowleged that it has one. Many people don't recognize that the goverment has any legitimate interest in what guns they own.
