I need an opinion from someone who understands politics REALLY well
On Tuesday, my friend Steve and I went to vote in the primaries. There was a category on the ballot for something like Council Woman. (I forget exactly what it was now) There was no name there. Steve told me afterwards that he wrote in my name on the ballot. If no one else gets a write-in, and my name is the only one nominated in that category, what happens? I would surely like to know, as I would rather not be surprised. I hope it will be considered just a single name, with no significance whatsoever. We're in Massachusetts, if it helps.

1. It does depend on the laws of your state

In WI, I know, one actually has to file papers that they intend to run as a write-in candidate, prior to the election. (People who miss the filing deadline, don't get enough signatures, or get so pissed off at the other candidates in the interim sometimes do so.) Otherwise, the vote doesn't count, even if the person wins and says they're willing to do it.

You might find your name in the paper, though -- some newspapers print the name of everyone who gets a vote (some only do it for those who get more than a certain amount, as not to bring attention to people who write in their friends, etc.).

On edit: Either way, even if you're the only vote, I can't imagine you'd be offered the council membership.

3. I voted in Massachusetts...
There were candidates for "State Committee Man" and "State Committee Woman." Maybe that's what you saw?

I'm not sure what the size of the jurisdiction is that elects people to these positions. But it's likely that at least one person tried to organize a write-in campaign and got more than one vote.

I wouldn't worry.

4. No one is going to make you take a position you did not run for.
Then again if you find you may want to try, good on you.
