What would President Kerry do with this situation?
Let us assume 2004 will be similar to 2000. Let's also agree
to ignore the Rocky Mountain states for the purposes of this
argument.

Bush wins Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Alabama,
Mississipi, Tennessee, Kentucky, both Carolinas, Missouri,
Virginia, and Georgia. Let's leave Florida outside the
calculation.

Kerry wins all of Gore's states, plus Indiana, New Hampshire,
and Ohio.

By my first approximation, Kerry wins. With or without
Florida.

But a geographically contiguous group of states voted for
Bush. Will they decide to secede from the Union?

If they do, how will President Kerry respond?

This is not unlikely.

My first response is "Let them go."

1. I'll be damned!!!
You think the south will secede if Bush loses or even that it is "not unlikely". I'm sorry but that's crazy. There would be civil war within the states before there would be any serious consideration of secession.

citizens down here who will not stand for such nonsense that there would be hell to pay for whoever suggested it. You should have seen the crap we just had over the governor's suggestion of school consolidation. Here in Arkansas, at least, the majority of our legislators are still Democrats.

On edit: Oh, and I don't think Wal Mart would stand for that, either. They rely too much on the rest of the country.

11. Yes I do
and the idea that states will secede over the next election is still absurd.

4. ain't no way Louisiana would secede from the US...
...we're lazy, and only get up that kinda effort for a real good party...matter of fact, most of those rePub votes were 'cause folks here mistakenly thought that when they said "Grand Ol' Party" they meant Mardi Gras...

12. And these nukes are controlled by the army
Who I quite highly doubt would turn those weapons over to Spurious George. They probably will think of Iraq, which I'll bet would probably still be a conflict at that point in the future.

I bet the missiles can still be fired from the silos w/o contacting the outside, if the base's contingent really wanted to, ala Dr. Strangelove.

9. WWKD?
Honestly I doubt the election of Kerry will inspire civil war. In each state that votes for Bush, there should still be a hearty number of people who voted democrat. But even if, say 65% vote Bush, not that many of the Bush voters will have the desire to seceede from the Union. This strikes me as implausible.

14. I suspect wishful thinking.
65% is an overwhelming majority. If 65% of the southern
states vote for Bush and he loses, I don't hold much hope for
the minority.

16. I suspect a tinfoil hat..
65:35. Fine. Do you really think that everyone who votes for Bush will want to seceede? For some reason, that seems more unlikely than a worst-case scenario. Even many of the most hardcore repubs. won't want to seceede, in my opinion. It's not like they seceeded when Clinton was elected. They'll just try to make Kerry's term a bitch..

15. shhhhh. it's my evil plan. Kerry receives all these emails demanding that

states that didn't vote for him be expelled from the country and a concrete and barbed wire peace fence put up. With checkpoints.

So the expelled states march en masse on Washington, throw out the whole status quo bunch, and have a revolution. The trick is that this is done by the 75% who don't vote.

The ones who voted for bush won't be any madder if the non-bush is an elected Kerry or a coup led by 99 squillion southerners demanding health care.
